Nine Pound Hammer

Just passed the 3 year mark of SiLT a week or so back, and I despite the recent lack of posts I swear I’m drainin’ every last drop out of this motherfucker. The fact that “draining” in this case is interchangeable with “recycle” is a given, right? Take for example post #440, which is composed of 75% recycled content of post #8, which was my review of Nine Pound Hammer’s Kentucky Breakdown LP. My take:
so needless to say I was bit skeptical about the new release from the reformed Nine Pound Hammer. I enjoyed their last studio effort Hayseed Timebomb, but that was 1994. In the interim guitarist Blaine Cartwright’s formed Nashville Pussy who’ve released a handful of albums of cock rock’n’roll posturing and AC/DC ripoff riffs. Nine Pound Hammer is less “arena” rock and more buzzsaw punk. They have been billed as “cowpunk” but you won’t confuse this for any Uncle Tupelo or other “Alt-country” crap. The only thing cowpunk is Scott Luallen’s hillbilly vocals, which you’ll either love or hate. I love ‘em, which is the biggest reason I’m a fan. Kentucky Breakdown provides 13 tracks of hellacious backwoods rock that continues right were Hayseed Timebomb leaves off - If I didn’t know better I’d swear this album and the previous were recorded at the same time, not 10 years apart.
Both Kentucky Breakdown and Hayseed Timebomb still get alot of play on the ‘ol Ipod, both albums chunk fulla big buzzsaw guitars and lyrics skewering life south of the Mason-Dixon line. Emerson over at OldPunks.com just wrote about Nine Pound Hammer, and when two mp3bloggers with a combined age somewhere north of retirement age recommend shit, then you know it’s gotta be the real deal. Chronic Sick

A couple of comments back someone asked me to repost my Chronic Sick tracks. Well, I never actually posted any Chronic Sick material, so it must be out there on some other blog. I could do some searching and throw out a link, but fuck it, I’m too lazy to track it down. Seeing as I have the tracks from an old CD-R from a couple of years back I might as well share.
The total output from New Jersey’s Chronic Sick included 1982’s 6 song 12″ EP Cutest Band in Hardcore and the 1983 3 track 7″ often referred to as Reagan Bands, both on the Mutha label. All you really need to know is that, despite the meathead lyrical sentiments, this is some choice ‘Shore Core’. That translates as surprisingly melodic punkish hardcore. The opening tracks “There Goes The Neighborhood” and “Dress Code” are 1-2 punch in the chops. Take a listen:
from 1982’s Cutest Band in Hardcore 12″
Chronic Sick - There Goes The Neighborhood.mp3
Chronic Sick - Dress Code.mp3
Chronic Sick - Public Suicide.mp3
Chronic Sick - Man Rape Blues.mp3
Chronic Sick - Mucho Macho.mp3
Chronic Sick - Pain for Profit.mp3
from 1983’s self-titled 7″
Chronic Sick - Reagan Bands.mp3
Chronic Sick - Crotch Rot.mp3
Chronic Sick - Blood Type X.mp3

V/A - Set it on Fire! A Tribute to the Scientists

Fulfilling a request I received recently, this is the 1993 compilation Set it On Fire! A Tribute to the Scientists. Man, I used to love these themed based compilations, but at some point it got played out for me. This one is pretty solid, both then and now. At the time it served as both an introduction to many cool bands (Cheater Slicks, Mono Men) as well as a primer on the weird, wild sounds of the Scientists. I actually heard this before I heard any of the Scientists actual releases, prompting me to seek out the Subpop compilation disc Absolute (the only Scientists material readily available in the latter half of the 90’s) . Nowadays, you can (and should) pick up the two Scientists compilations out on SFTRI - Blood Red River and Human Jukebox.
But back to this comp - 12 songs, 12 bands of the noise/garage/trash persuasion originally released on the Dog Meat label out of Australia. There’s alot of hits on this one. My choices here are the Slicks, Mono Men, Mudhoney, and Sugar Shack, but really, there ain’t a stinker in the bunch.
Cheater Slicks - Set it on Fire.mp3
Honeymoon Killers - Murderess in a Purple Dress.mp3
Mono Men - Swampland.mp3
Stump Wizards - Bet Ya Lyin’.mp3
Star Spangled Banana - Frantic Romantic.mp3
Walkingseeds - Nitro.mp3
Mudhoney - We Had Love.mp3
Sugar Shack - Hell Beach.mp3
Vertigo - Pissed on Another Planet.mp3
The Philisteins - Teenage Dreams.mp3
Laughing Hyenas - Solid Gold Hell.mp3
The Sunset Strip - It Must Be Nice.mp3
Gaza Strippers

So Joe over at LDOMOE gave me a shout out last week while writing about the almighty Didjits - much appreciation, man. Without a doubt, the Didjits are at the top of my list when it comes to all time fave bands (check here). After the Didjits demise in the mid-90’s main Didjit Rick Sims became a hired gun before settling back in as the frontman for the Gaza Strippers. Make no mistake, this is not the Didjits - the music here is more in the vein of the 70’s hard rock of latter day Turbonegro and other Scandinavian neo glamrockers. The Gaza Strippers best moments have a touch of the deranged lunacy of the best Didjits material; their worst are juvenile punkish cock rock. If it was anyone else besides Rick Sims I’m not sure how much I would like this, but hell, I’m a fan of Sims’ high pitched shrieking and fuck you attitude. As it stands the band put out four releases before packing it in 2003. I’ve handpicked my favorites from the band’s material
From 1999’s Laced Candy CD on Man’s Ruin
Gaza Strippers - Automat.mp3
Gaza Strippers - Yin and Yang The Flower Pot Man.mp3 (Love and Rockets)
From 2000’s 1,000 Watt Confessions on Lookout
Gaza Strippers - Juvenile Detention.mp3
Gaza Strippers - As Long As It Feels Good.mp3
From 2001’s Electric Bible - The Last Testament disc, which contained the first single, demo tracks, and a couple of tracks from Laced Candy
Gaza Strippers - Lipstick Vogue.mp3 (Elvis Costello)
Gaza Strippers - Stinger.mp3 (b-side to first single)
From 2002’s From the Desk of Dr. Freepill on Nicotine
Gaza Strippers - Almost Instant Karma.mp3
Gaza Strippers - Sheer Heart Attack.mp3 (Queen)
Notes:
> Original Didjits played some reunion gigs last fall around the big T&G block party dates. Please, let there be more of those!

Gandhi
Essentially a repost of my original Gandhi post from August 2004. A comment on a recent podcast post asked if I had any additional Gandhi tracks, the answer to which is “yes”. Short primer - Gandhi was the Page Hamilton project from 2002-2003 who recorded this 5 track demo. “Enemies” and “Everyone Loves You” ended up on Helmet’s 2004 Size Matters album, while “Money Shot” was later released on the 2006 Helmet release Monochrome. I prefer these versions to the Helmet ones, but I’ll still take Strap It On any day.
Gandhi - Everybody Loves You.mp3
Gandhi - Just Like Me.mp3
Gandhi - Money Shot.mp3
Gandhi - Enemies.mp3
Gandhi - Blacklight.mp3
I’m hoping to find some time next week to get some new (i.e. not reposted) posts up. Shit’s been crazy, here’s one reason why

Manson Youth

A comment on the Noise From Nowhere post requested the first Manson Youth 7″. Well, I’ll go one better and give you both Manson Youth 7 inches. Both were released posthumously, the first (Death Dance )was released as Dr. Strange #1 in 1990. God’s Fun Children followed in 1991. I think these were originally recorded in the 1983-84 time frame, but there’s no recording information that I can find. All I know about the band is that they were from California. Lineup information is noted as:
DJ Setlak - Vocals
Robbie Sandford - Guitar
Barry Hoppie - Bass
Corey Miller - Drums
As for the music, try off kilter, speedy hardcore with an weird vibe. Not my favorite records from that era, but they grow on you after a couple of listens:
from Death Dance
Manson Youth - Eaten Alive By Rats.mp3
Manson Youth - Dog Rider.mp3
Manson Youth - Vulnavia.mp3
Manson Youth - Let’s Call it a Day.mp3
from God’s Fun Children
Manson Youth - Need God?.mp3
Manson Youth - Karen.mp3
Manson Youth - Saw Tomorrow.mp3
Manson Youth - The Penis That Ate the World/Twins.mp3
Manson Youth - An Eye For An Eye.mp3
Anyone able to fill in the blanks?
34 commentsMonsula

A couple of weeks back I received a request for some Monsula, which caused me to drag out my only record by them, their 1990 Nickel EP on Lookout. When this came out I gave it short shrift, playing it once and immediately boxing it. When I pulled it out for a listen awhile back I couldn’t even remember what it sounded like. Surprisingly, it wasn’t the poppy crap I was expecting. Instead it was catchy, melodic hardcore with distinct DC/emo influence. Well worth a listen. I think I’ll track down their 1992 Sanitized LP and see what else I may have missed out on.

Monsula - Missing You.mp3
Monsula - Razors.mp3
