Some Christmas Songs That Don’t Blow

I’m doing this mostly out of obligation. I generally hate Christmas music. Specifically, I hate when otherwise cool and worthwhile bands stink up the joint by performing cutesy, annoying holiday crap. Despite my disdain for this kind of schtick I’ve still managed to accumulate a good amount of Christmas tracks that mostly suck. A handful manage to rise above the kitsch level. Below are 12 cuts that display a crapload of holiday cheer while still managing to rock:

From Flyinbg Bomb Records very cool Surprise Package Collectors Edition disc
The Paperbacks - Let’s Get Lit.mp3
Bantam Rooster - Let’s Just Fuck For Christmas.mp3
The Mistreaters - Santa Stole My Baby.mp3
Rocket 455 - Santa Aint Coming For Christmas.mp3
MHz - Secret Santa.mp3

From SFTRI’s mostly disposable Happy Birthday Baby Jesus comps
The Creamers - Bob Kringle.mp3
Red Aunts - Little Drummer Bitch.mp3
New Bomb Turks - Christmas (Baby Please Come Home).mp3
Quadrajets - Christmas Time is Coming.mp3
Jet Boys - Merry Christmas, Fuck You.mp3

From a boot of the 1993 KROQ Acoustic Xmas concert - nothing acoustic here, though the sound quality is mediocre
Bad Religion - Silent Night/Fuck Christmas.mp3

I’ve saved the best for last. The Lazy Cowgirls 1986 cover of this early Bob Segar tune is an absolute blast. If you download one song today, make sure it’s this one!
Lazy Cowgirls - Sock It To Me Santa.mp3

I’ll be back at some point (after I polish off a couple of these) - Happy Holidays to you and yours!

Trick or Treat, Fuckers!

Time for the third annual SILT Halloween bag of ghoulish goodies. Actually, I never put anything out last year. And technically 2 of the 3 songs I posted back in 2004 are included here once again. But fuck it, here’s a pantload (translation: 13) of tracks celebrating all the joys of Hallow’s Eve. Now excuse while I work my way through another bag of candy. Apologies if my level of wickedness is disappointing to you all.

The Freeze - Halloween Night.mp3
Gang Green - Haunted House.mp3
Misfits - Night of the Living Dead.mp3
Dead Kennedys - Halloween.mp3
Cramps - Zombie Dance.mp3
Blowtops - Teenage Zombie Blues.mp3
Gun Club - Jack on Fire.mp3
Gaza Strippers - Laced Candy.mp3
Candy Snatchers - Halloween.mp3

Gaunt - Black Cat.mp3
Lee Harvey Oswald Band - Getting Wasted With The Vampires.mp3
Kilslug - Warlocks, Witches, and Demons.mp3
Mudhoney - Halloween.mp3
(Sonic Youth)

I’m taking requests for the 2007 version of this list, so have it. And while you’re poking around, check out the Hell House MP3 Mix over at Vinyl Mine for my creepy goodness.

Touch & Go 25th Anniversary

First off - I didn’t go. These days I can barely drive 60 miles to Binghamton to take in X and the Rollins Band, let alone 700+ miles to Chicago for 3 days. Not that I didn’t want to though. Joe at Last Days of Man on Earth posted his take on the weekend and made me so envious I could spit. A couple of days late (I meant to post this before the festivities began last Friday), here’s a mix of the the bands I would have liked to have seen. Tops on my list would be the Didjits and Scratch Acid, both worth the price of admission according to early reports. Feel free to share your opinions of the event in the comments

Girls Against Boys - In Like Flynn.mp3
Pegboy - Dangerwood.mp3
Killdozer - King of Sex.mp3
Didjits - Agent 99.mp3
PW Long - The Shakin’ Fears.mp3
Negative Approach - Whatever I Do.mp3
Scratch Acid - She Said.mp3
Man or Astroman? - Linear Particle Accelerator.mp3
Big Black - Big Money.mp3
Shellac - Wingwalker.mp3
Arcwelder - Down To The Wire.mp3
The Monorchid - Southern Fried Wonton.mp3

And in case you missed it, there’s a bunch of video clips of the action available on YouTube.

Songs About Years

I’ve been trying to squeeze out a 3 week post for months now, hoping to get back to the pre-February 2006 schedule. So what do you get for an extra post? A potluck of songs with years in the title. Why? Because I fucking feel like it. Kinda goofy? Absolutely…

Dayglo Abortions - 1967.mp3
Stooges - 1970.mp3
Armitage Shanks - 1977.mp3
Gizmos - 1978.mp3
Teengenerate - 1979.mp3
Angry Samoans - 1981.mp3
Zero Boys - Livin’ in the ’80’s.mp3
NOTA - Summer of ‘82.mp3
Genetic Control - 1984.mp3
Rubbers - 1988.mp3

As always, looking for your suggestions.

Straight and Alert!

I swear must have entered some kind of time warp or worm hole back to my senior year in high school, because there it was in front of me - Gorilla Biscuits and Murphy’s Law playing last night at the Country Club in Syracuse. It’s like it was fucking 1989 all over again, with the exception that I’m a lot older, fatter, and just plain disinterested in most NYHC these days. So yeah, I passed on the show. Instead, I spent some time pulling together a couple of my favorite pisstakes on straight edge from years past….

And oh man, I’d forgotten just how ridiculously funny The Posi-Machine was, and just how much it pissed off some of my most enthusiastic SXE friends (except the “slow” girl we hung out with, who thought that Crucial Youth were dead serious)

Crucial Youth - Caffeine.mp3
Crucial Youth - Big Mouth.mp3
Crucial Youth - Scarlet M.mp3

Buddyhead has the lowdown on Gayrilla Biscuits. Their first 7″ featured 8 homofied covers of straightedge/tough guy classics by the likes of Sick of it All, Minor Threat, Bold, and Gorilla Biscuits. Crude and retarded, but entertaining in junior high kinda way.

Gayrilla Biscuits - Flaming Ass Still Burns.mp3
Gayrilla Biscuits - Nailed in the Ass.mp3

I really don’t know much about Grudge, other than they were from LA and released their Project Ex 7″ in 1989.

Grudge - Drinking’s Great.mp3
Grudge - Buckle Up.mp3

Fun With Numbers

I woke up the other day with an strange urge to listen to “20 Eyes” by the Misfits, which lead me to start thinking about a way to include some songs by bands that might not get their own individual post. Maybe some kind of numbers game? After considering songs with numbers, band names that include numbers, album titles with numbers, etc. I ended up with this simple counting game. And after all of that I still didn’t find a way to work in “20 Eyes”. Here’s the first ten, no need to take of your shoes and socks to count unless you’re a freak or have been involved in some kind of farming accident:

Fugazi - Song #1.mp3
from their 1990 Sub Pop single (and Dischord single, and Dischord CD)

Bad Religion - Part II (The Numbers Game).mp3
from 1988’s Suffer LP, one of the original song ideas for this post

Sheer Terror - Three Year Bitch.mp3
From 1992’s Thanks For Nuthin’ LP, reissued on the Bulldog Edition double CD.

Volcano Suns - Four Letters.mp3
From 1985’s All Night Lotus Party. The first 3 Volcano Suns LP’s are all worthwhile (and OOP, I think)

Sugar Shack - Five Weeks Ahead of My Time.mp3
Choice garage snarl - this is the title track from their 1997 album on Estrus

Pagans - Six & Change.mp3
First Pagans single from 1977. This guy just sold one for $885!

Blight - Seven Winds over the Gobi Desert.mp3
Weird noise damage circa 1983 from Tesco Vee and former Fix members on Touch & Go. This is just about to be reissued by T&G.

Husker Du - Eight Miles High.mp3
Mould & Co. own this cover of the Byrds. Originally released as a 7″ in 1984

Born Against - Nine Years Later.mp3
From the coincidentally titled 1991 LP Nine Patriotic Hymns for Children

Beasts of Bourbon - Ten Wheels For Jesus.mp3
Countrified skronk from Tex Perkins and some of the Scientists. From 1984’s The Axeman’s Jazz
