Something I Learned Today

Punk Rock and Other Assorted Bullshit

About

The Site:

Something I Learned Today was started in May of 2004 without any plan or direction. I had been searching for an mp3 blog that highlighted punk and when I couldn’t find one I started my own. SiLT is all about the music I dig, both new and old, out of print and easily available, obscure and well known. I have a personal affinity for early US hardcore and punk with a focus on the Midwest, LA, Texas, and DC scenes. I also like the whole KBD/Bloodstains/Hyped2death comps. In recent years I’ve become fond of the garage punk and fucked up blues thing. And deep down inside I’ll always harbor a love for grunge and noise. I don’t claim to be an expert on anything. I ain’t a “music journalist” nor do I have any aspirations to be one. My main motivation is exposing folks to some quality music they may have never heard or may have forgotten about at some point. At this point I’m posting about 3 two times a week, usually Monday, Wednesday, Friday whenever I get around to it. Enjoy it now, this thing could go belly-up at any time.

The “Author”:

  • Seriously, I have no idea who would be interested in the details. If for some reason you are curious then head on over to Something’s Gone Wrong Again, my day to day blog about general bullshit. Below are the basics:
  • I’m married with kids, living in Syracuse, NY and working in the IT field.
  • I used to be serious record hound, but circumstances have caused me to cut back severely.
  • I got into punk in the mid-80’s (1985?) while living in Orange County, CA thanks to Rodney on the Roq and this punk midget who lived on my street and let me borrow his records.
  • I cut my teeth on the late 80’s punk scene in Rochester, NY, watching cool bands like Hunger Artist, Bent, and Solution? and listening to the Disorder show on WITR.
  • Regretably, I don’t get out much anymore. This is due mostly to work, family, and geography (seriously, no one plays Syracuse)
  •
    The “Disclaimer” and Contact Info
Don’t want your music/photos posted on this site? Get in touch and I’ll remove the stuff pronto. I reserve the right to reprint your cease and desist request, but I’ll only do that if your a cock about things.

I love email and comments - the more the merrier. Hit me up with questions, opinions, requests. At this point I can’t guarantee a response to email or comments, but I try to read everything I get (when it’s not lost in spam filters)

      Hey,

Just stumbled onto your website while working. The name was what brought me in and then the expansive list of all sorts of punk kept me for a while. Didn’t have time to go in depth, I am a cardiac nurse - and patients have to take precedent.

I assume the name of the web site ” Something I learned today” comes from the Zen Arcade album? If not where did you come up with it?

I also was introduced to the punk movment in the early 80’s and was fortunate enough to be in Minneapolis at the time because every big act that came through and played First Avenue had to stay for an all ages show on Sundays. So at age 13 I was able to see Black Flag, The Dead Kennedy’s, 7 seconds, Minor Threat, Husker Du, The Replacements, etc…..

Thanks for all the hard work

I stumbled on this site as well. After downloading song after song and buying a shit load of discs for mohawkradio.com I have to put them on hold and get to this stuff here on this web site. I’m certain it is going to be better than mohawkradio. I have been into collecting hardcore and related music since late 1984. Shit, now my burns are going to fatten up my music library. Hmmm, I need ROOM for all this stuff and I can’t wait to get started. Peace…

I just came across this site waiting for Philly to explode in a fireworks storm (hopefully burning all the tourists) out my 5th story window. Anyway i was looking for what happened to the likes of kilslug, the mighty sphincter, life sentence, code of honer, etc just random bands I remember from the 80s that I never hear of anymore. On top i started listening to an archive show of Live from combustion manor Destroy yer radio sounds like me and my friends bitchin about the same shit funny and great songs glad I have beer before the stores close. Did a search on the site for a band i was in 10 years ago The strychnine Babies didnt find anything maybe you’ll dig it. Funny thing one of the members(Christian Black) was just on New York Doll story of Arthur Kane flick for a minute he also played with Dee Dee raome a few years before he died.

wow! thanks so much for doing all this! i’ve been feeling sort of retro and wanting to listen to all that sort of “classic” hardcore/whatever, and not really with the time or motivation to dig through my own records and make mp3’s. you have great taste in music.

    13. arsi July 25th, 2006 2:08 pm

Awesome site, thanks a lot for this stuff. I visit here regularly, so much rare and out-of-print tracks here.

Thanks a lot for this, man.

Hi,love the site recently i have been putting my tape archive onto cd and for years now i have been listing to this song it’s from the John Peel show [he was a british dj who played a lot of obscure punk and hardcore] and it’s been bugging me exactly who this song is by and what it’s called.

I have posted it on a few punk forums and the nearest i have had so far is a band called seaweed but it’s not them.

All i can tell you about this fantastic song is it was played in August 1993 it’s american and i have checked anything and everything i can to find the artist if you want to listen to it heres the link:-

      http://www.esnips.com/doc/495c23b0-6054-4937-89ec-f9b5ca1e6928/unknown-peel-song.wav

If anyone can tell me the artist and title i would be over the moon and you would automattically become the king or queen of punk.

Pleases e-mail me with comments or surgestions to:- terry.1977@ntlworld.com

Even if you just think it might be such-and-such.

At the time John was playing a lot of stuff like sub-pop,smpthy for the record industry, and dischord records but after checking there websites i couldn’t find anything i even tried alternative tentacles and smaller record lables like epitaph please help i am gratefull for even a a title or some of the lyrics. Thanks T

I love your site its opened me up to assloads of stuff that i would never have gotten a chance to hear living in bumfuc KY. People like you keep the hardcore old school punk rock scene alive and make people like me inspired to keep trying to make it in this genra.

The only thing I have to ask is for the Rotters - Sit On My Face Stevie Nicks. Its on a post called Name Dropper Part 2 but the link is broken. I’ve searched long and hard for that song and its killing me being so close. So can ya help a young punk by reposting or fixing the link. I actually had a chance to buy a first pressing for 15 bucks but I had already spent my money buying those lil read along books with the records for my daughter lol

Keep up the good work man. I hope your site NEVER goes down. Viva La SomethingILearned!!!!!!!!

    16. Druff August 15th, 2006 1:43 am

Wish I could find an email address instead of having to post this where anyone can see it. Maybe I’m just not looking hard enough.

I regularly visit SILT, 7 Inch Punk, and Strange Reaction. I can generally count on either hearing something that reminds me of my youthful days as a punk in Fullerton CA, else I hear something I wanted to hear back then but never got to. Case in point: the Upright Citizens LP on BYO. Back around 1986 or so a friend told me that it was really fucking amazing. I used to check for it, probably for the following ten years or so, but never happened across it. I’ve seen it on eBay relatively recently, but for some reason it’s always in bad condition. Anyway, something made me think of it and so I came here thinking it would be my best bet. I’m determined to hear it some day, dammit.

Excellent site! I initially found the link to your blog on 7″ Punk and have been checking it several times a week since then.

At the risk of seeming like a pimp, I thought that you may be interested in an mp3 blog devoted to grunge (think Bundle of Hiss and Green River, not Mad Season) my brother and I started: http://lamestainnorthwest.blogspot.com/.

    25. AlleyBones October 27th, 2006 4:53 pm

I love this site so much. Thank you for all your hard work. I learn new music here all the tie and I love it. I use some of your mixes for my pirate radio show.

Its so hard to find good sources of great music, and info on them. Thank you thank you thank you! You are my favorite.

ps- Do you ever take recommendations? I’m sure you dont need them but I was thinking you should check out the Teenage Harlets. They are a pretty cool SF band, all 1 minute long songs, and great.

You can find them here: http://teenageharlets.com/
      and here: http://www.myspace.com/teenageharlets

Thanks again, keep up the good work.

Hello Sir: I really, really like this site, and I’m glad someone still listens to these bands. I’m wondering if you could put up the Bullet Lavolta post again, the one from a few years ago? I got really excited when I found it while looking at past bands you’d put up, but it wouldn’t allow me to play any of the songs. Anyway, good job with all this!
