Something I Learned Today

Punk Rock and Other Assorted Bullshit

Karp

If you like loaded, pounding, repetitive riffs, banshee vocals, and the occasional 9 minute marathon then this is the shit for you. I’m feeling lazy today (today? how about the past two weeks) so I’m going to cut and paste from the wikipedia writeup on Washington state’s noisemongers Karp:

Karp was a rock band from Olympia, Washington, that formed in 1990 and lasted until 1998… Karp managed to mix the terror of hardcore, The Melvins, and Black Sabbath with an ear for pop-influenced song assembly. The band name is inspired from a newsletter/zine that bassist Chris Smith put out in highschool and is an acronym that stands for “Kill All Redneck Pricks”

Karp would release three full lengths (1994’s Mustache Ride, 1996’s Suplex, and 1997’s Self-Titled LP), with a singles comp (Action Chemistry) released in 2001. Bruising, punishing stuff here - one listen to “Bacon Industry” is proof All releases are recommended if this is your thing, Self Titled LP and Action Chemistry are my personal faves. Take a listen:

This is great - thanks for posting these mp3s.

Any chance that some of the older mp3s on this website - Vaz, DopeGunsAndFucking 1 & 2, Easy Action, Vaz, Hammerhead 7″s - will be available again? Most of those links don’t work. I’d love to hear some of that stuff.

I had the immense pleasure to see Karp perform on four occasions, they were exceptional. Collectively and individually, they were some of the funniest dudes you’ll ever meet.

As the internet will tell you, Jared (bass) and Scott (drums, RIP) were in the Whip with Joe Preston. In addition, Jared is currently in Big Business and The Melvins, and sang for the Tight Bros. I don’t think Chris (guitar) has been in any other bands.

This post put a big smile on my face

You should post MP3’s from “The Whip” seven inch. I could never find that on vinyl.

    hello, thanks for posting these!

karp also released a split 12″ (one short song, one long-ass song) with rye coalition on troubleman, too. or are these songs included on other releases? i just dont know. anyhow, ding dong!

the split with Rye Coalition was not to my knowledge included on any other album. that is a great record though. Karp was definitely one of the greatest bands ever. i saw them a few times and actually got to hang out with them once and they were the nicest, funnest guys you could imagine.

Karp rules, yes! But so does Big Business these days, with Jared of Karp on vocals and bass, and Coady Willis on drums. These guys are also part of the current Melvins line up. Tight Bro’s From Way Back When is another amazing band, with Jared on vocals.

DANG! So great to read about Karp here. It’s nice to see others remember them as fondly as I do. I think the K Records 10″ was actually called “Mustaches Wild” , though Mustache Ride does have a certain je ne sais quois about it.

I released, with the help of my friend Rick Stoddart, the Whip 7″ on Wantage, and I still actually have copies of it. They recorded a grand total of 5 songs, I think, and 2 of them were released on the 7″. the other three were set to be released on a CD EP right before Scott died in 2003. I’ve been talking to Jared periodically about getting all the songs out on a 12″/CD for a while, and we’re still working at making that happen, and doing it as a benefit to a cause in Scott’s name.

My favorite Karp songs are on the Tumwater T-Birds 7″, and later on the the Action Chemistry CD. Specifically, I’d Rather Be Clogging is probably my all-time favorite song.

If you check out the Wantage USA website at http://wantageusa.com you can get the Whip stuff, as well as some Big Biz releases.

    KAAAAARRRP!

No kidding! Hands down (hands up?) my all time favorite band. I remember seeing them play I’d Rather Be Clogging years ago, and Jared was all “Try not to speed it up at the end, you always speed it up.” Anyone who knows this tune will understand the humor.

Get your hands off my cake!!!

One more to add: Karp had a track on the Bostonot comp, which was a bunch of NW bands covering the tracks on Boston’s first album. I believe Karp did ‘Let me take you home tonight,’ but my copy is in a box somewhere. Classic!!
