Face Value

I’m sure there was more to the Cleveland hardcore scene in the early 90’s than Integrity and Face Value, but those two bands were Cleveland in my circle of friends. Even cooler, they were just a couple of hours down the pike from us which means we got see them a lot. While I dug the evil metal vibe of Integrity’s Those Who Fear Tomorrow, Face Value were the shit. I think the only thing that got me to take off their 1990 Coming of Age EP off the turntable was receiving their follow up full length Price Of Maturity. Man, that thing just rocked - tough vocals, lots of tempo changes, and a gnarly hardcore guitar sound (despite the occasional solo). This was one of the last great tough guy hardcore records I purchased. And really, it was the last great record for Face Value. Follow up’s Kick It Over and Choices (post vocalist Tony Erba’s departure) were disappointing. Erba has gone onto play bass with the H-100’s, 9 Shocks Terror, Gordon Solie Motherfuckers, and Amps II Eleven. He is currently fronting Cheap Tragedies
The CD of Price of Maturity included the Coming of Age EP. This thing looks to be OOP, so you can grab all 22 tracks right here as a .rar archive. A couple of my favorites below. Dance it up Clevo style!

You clearly know what you’re doing with this shit brother, kill that shit, brother, eat it all up.
Hats on heads.
Horrible, horrible - boyscout bullshit. But with only one such post in a couple of hundred, it’s totally okay.
Do you have ‘The New Hope’? A great Cleveland sampler from the first wave of Ohio-core… The Guns, Positive Violence…
A surprisingly good comp which I have ab out half of on an old tape. I’ve ripped my faves and still dig ‘em, especially the Guns’ I’m Not Right’
Thank you SO much for this!
It was a major hole in my MP3 collection; FV were an incredible live act. Erba is one of the best front men to ever grace a stage.
Now I need the Insight, Profax and Project X 7″s!
Oh boy!! Erich said it’s OK!! Yeaahhh!!! Let’s all join
hands now. Biddip-Bo!
ever hear any Zero Defects?

this is really great!!!!
Amazing selection of mp3s (ICONOCLAST!!! holy shit, I didn’t think anybody remembered those guys) But on to something else…in about 87 some friends of mine played with a band at Gilman street called Diddly Squat form the Pacific Northwest. I’ve seen some stuff about a Foo Fighter being in this band. I had a ripping demo tape by these guys that got ripped off and for about 20 years I’ve wanted it back. No luck so far…any chance you got some leads?
Thanks LS
lou sin: diddly squat put out a 7″ and 2 demos. if you have soulseek, you can find it all on there. nate mendel from the foo fighters was in the band. he and the drummer then went on to christ on a crutch, who re-located from d.c. their album “crime pays when pigs die” is great and sounds kind of like where diddly squat left off. i believe that album is still in print.
excellent. i remember christ on a cruch, always thought they were an sf bay area band. will check soulseek (although i have a grim feeling that was an early spot i checked, ending up with hits like ‘leather face diddly squat m4a’! thanks again. this place rules.
ls
serious straight ahead rock.
they might not be considered garage, but there is certainly some meeting between garage and hardcore here.
such a great band. makes me happy.
thanks a bunch!
anyone who likes cleveland hardcore should check out an old clevo scenester’s website:lovebunni press.com there is a pretty hilarious ClevoHardcore History archive in there. (lotsa pix of the erbs, aaron melnick, steve murad etc etc. )

thanks for putting this up…i remember seeing them in milwaukee at some sunday matinee with great local bands withstand and drawback…it was a superb show..erba climbed on some lighting rig and the owner of the facility (some very pissed of 60 year old woman) was shouting at him…it was great.
didi Outface ever actually put anything out? i’d love to get some mp3s if they did!
Thanks for posting this. I have their demo tape, and I listen to it every so often… They played my hometown of Louisville, KY a few times along with Integrity. Also saw them both play in Dekalb, Illinois. As I remember the Dekalb show, they played with Louisville favorites Undermine. If you don’t have those Undermine 7inches, you should look for ‘em. They have a myspace. Check it out.
Anyway, I agree FV is cheezy late 1980s SXE, but it’s fun and it reminds me of being young. Those shows were good.
