Punk Rock and Other Assorted Bullshit

Bad Brains/Black Market Baby split

Shit, there ain’t much I can say about either of these legendary bands that you don’t already know. This split was released by Yesterday and Today records in 1990, featuring one track apiece from each band. The Bad Brains track was recorded in 1979 and was released on the Best of Limp comp. The Black Market Baby song was recorded in 1981, and released on the Connected compilation (same version?).

I picked this up as I my Bad Brains fanaticism was waning, killed mostly due to the glut of live bullshit spewed forth in the late 80’s. Hearing “Don’t Bother Me” was a shot in the arm, a jolt of spastic Bad Brains. Even cooler, “World at War” was my first introduction to Black Market Baby - and christ almighty, it was a fucking revelation. At the time though nothing from Black Market Baby was in print, which was torture, though a year or so later Bitzcore released the Baby Takes and Baby on Board LP’s. Luckily, you can easily track down “World at War” and a ton of other BMB’s greatest cuts on 2006’s retrospective Coulda…Shoulda…Woulda

has anyone ever noticed that the bass line for black market baby’s song “Downward Christian Soldiers ” is the same as raw power’s politicians or vice versa.

appropriate blog to be posted since bad brains just played the reunion show last night in portland. it was a shocker blast from the past, but actually the crowd was more intense. bad brains are tight, but it’s kind of weird watching all the old videos and hoping to see hr go off but then he is all mellow strumming a guitar and flashing peace signs. not that i would have missed it for the world, but something about the subtlety of the performance riminded me of the recent jesus and mary chain performance on letterman (which i watched right before going to the brains). something anticlimatic about both.

I’ve been trying to track down “Rise and Shine” by the Young and the Useless from “Real Men Don’t Use Floss.” Any chance you have it or know where I might find it?

Hey Yoshida, did you notice that HR’s guitar wasn’t plugged in for the entire performance?

I was at the show on the 25th and I have to say it was a huge thrill to get to see the Bad Brains in such a small club. You know I was up front the whole time. Too bad the encore was wrecked by those fucking scumrock douchebag losers.

Hey don’t knock those late ’80s live albums too hard, Eric! The 1st Bad Brains record I ever owned was a cassette of the then recently released The Youth are Getting Restless back in 1990. Of course, a year later a friend of mine in high school just handed me the Roir tape because he didn’t like it (can you believe that? He was into more melodic stuff like The Descendents and what not), but for a while it was all I knew by them.

Oh and I also saw them about a week ago, though at Sasquatch and unfortunately not in a small club. Nevertheless, they were way better than what I was expecting. The songs from their weak new album even sounded good and there was lots of older stuff played. They opened with “I Against I” and closed with “At the Movies” (I think). It was weird to see HR so calm, though it was eons better than the Soul Brains disaster or when I saw them in the early ’90s with a different singer.

Yeah Bryn, Bad Brains had five tunes in the set list for an encore, but the crowd was a bunch of tweakers.
I didn’t really notice HR’s guitar, from my vantage point under all the stagedivers. I was kind of surprised that HR even bothered bringing a guitar. Guess it gave him reason not to get all nuts like in the old days. The opening band’s David Yow wannabe pretty well made up for that though. Despite the crowd I’d go back to see that show any day of the year. It was kind of bad that Zolar X was playing across the street at the same time though. Would’ve like to hit both shows.

Bad Brains are a bunch of homophobic bigots who deserve their obscurity

Bad brains ended with Pay To Cum at sasquatch I Know cause i got the pick Darryl threw after. Was at Berbatis on 25 also. Both Show were great for what they were But i got to say the gorge had a beeter feel for me.no encore at the pan was ok as the brains did the whole set with no brakes, i did see the set list and would of liked to hear Coptic times or Sacred Love both alternates. One other thing for Dude June11 I met Dr Know that weekend and he definetly is not homophobic or a bigot for that matter, just a super nice Rasta Man With the best intentions for everyone,Trust Me.As For obscurity im sure you deserve yours as well. Thank you

without the bad brains the (music) world would be much different nowadays.

  13. larry k June 16th, 2007 10:22 pm

    bigots homofobes ?
you dont know these people and have no idea what they have done for music
why dont you just learn ?
your like 17 or something right?

  14. trickbunny June 17th, 2007 11:18 pm

larry. come on man- it’s a well known fact that the brains (or at least H.R.) were/are homophobic. as much as I love their music and appreciate their gift to punk rock, facts are facts. do you know what the song “don’t blow no bubbles” is about? look into it. and “dude” may or may not be 17, but he probably knows when to use “you’re” instead of “your”. sorry larry, YOU’RE just plain wrong on this one.

Boyd, I still carry my original vinyl senseless offerings. Glad you are still living life.

  19. Danny G June 26th, 2007 2:00 pm

Boyd - will check out Rustbuckit. I’m from LA and BMB were one of the few East Coast bands that made an impression on my fellow punker pals. I had the good fortune to see a BMB performance sometime in the early to mid 90s at the 9:30 while in DC on business. Can you imagine how stoked I was to learn that BMB was playing one of the two nights I was in town!?!?!?

  20. Boyd Farrell June 27th, 2007 12:33 pm

    Hey Danny,
    That’s a pretty cool coincidence…You see, there is a god…

Moonshine…I sold all my copies of Senseless Offerings to get money for cheap booze and cheaper women!!
