V/A - Set it on Fire! A Tribute to the Scientists

Fulfilling a request I received recently, this is the 1993 compilation Set it On Fire! A Tribute to the Scientists. Man, I used to love these themed based compilations, but at some point it got played out for me. This one is pretty solid, both then and now. At the time it served as both an introduction to many cool bands (Cheater Slicks, Mono Men) as well as a primer on the weird, wild sounds of the Scientists. I actually heard this before I heard any of the Scientists actual releases, prompting me to seek out the Subpop compilation disc Absolute (the only Scientists material readily available in the latter half of the 90’s) . Nowadays, you can (and should) pick up the two Scientists compilations out on SFTRI - Blood Red River and Human Jukebox.
But back to this comp - 12 songs, 12 bands of the noise/garage/trash persuasion originally released on the Dog Meat label out of Australia. There’s alot of hits on this one. My choices here are the Slicks, Mono Men, Mudhoney, and Sugar Shack, but really, there ain’t a stinker in the bunch.

Thanks a bunch! May your cup overflow with women!
Thanks for this, didn’t know it existed. I’ve always been a massive Scientists fan, think their mid period was the best, stuff around the ‘This Heart Don’t Run On love, This Heart Don’t Run On Blood’ EP. They did a great ‘cover themselves’ LP called ‘We Had Love’ which was basically them covering their earlier catalogue with superfuzzed guitars, an apsolute stormer of a record. Think it was shortly before ‘Human Jukebox’ came out.
Anyhoo, looking forward to hearing the covers. There’s a great Iggy And The Stooges covers 2CD thang as well called ‘We Will Fall’ that’s well worth checking out too.
Whatever happened to Dogmeat Records, anyways? They were supposed to come out with a Seeds tribute, did that ever come out?
Dogmeat Records also did a tribute to The Troggs.
The Scientists just played Sydney a few weeks ago and it was incredible. They opened with Swampland and finished with We Had Love. They seem to do a one off show every 5 years or so. I believe they have a new live LP coming out soon. It was recorded a few years back at a European gig if I remember correctly. Lots of rumors about a one off Saints show soon with original lineup.
The live Scientists record that is now out, it’s called Sedition, was recorded in London last May ( they supported Mudhoney at the Shepherds Bush Empire)which I was lucky enough to see and then saw them in Brisbane a few weeks ago and both times were friggin great.Oh yeh the original Saints line up are booked to play a a festival called Pig City in July!!!!!!!!!!!along with the Riptides and other old aussie punk bands,I can’t wait.

This is indeed a raucous beast of an album. Regarding Dogmeat’s sad demise, Dave Laing, it’s principal, still works for Shock Records in Melbourne but was burned pouring money into Powdermonkeys and the label folded. The surviving members of The Philisteins - whose cover of “Teenage Dreamer” on this comp creams the original, will soon release a compilation of their brief, incendiary career as released by Greasey Pop, Sympathy for the Record Industry and Dogmeat, c.1987-1991.
Dogmeat’s planned Seeds comp was never released, and the fantastic but sadly under-appreciated Philisteins did (or planned to do) a scorchin’ cover of “The Wind Blows Your Hair”. I can’t remember if they actually recorded it. The forthcoming comp of the ‘Steins will be on Melbourne label, Off the Hip.
