Chronic Sick

A couple of comments back someone asked me to repost my Chronic Sick tracks. Well, I never actually posted any Chronic Sick material, so it must be out there on some other blog. I could do some searching and throw out a link, but fuck it, I’m too lazy to track it down. Seeing as I have the tracks from an old CD-R from a couple of years back I might as well share.
The total output from New Jersey’s Chronic Sick included 1982’s 6 song 12″ EP Cutest Band in Hardcore and the 1983 3 track 7″ often referred to as Reagan Bands, both on the Mutha label. All you really need to know is that, despite the meathead lyrical sentiments, this is some choice ‘Shore Core’. That translates as surprisingly melodic punkish hardcore. The opening tracks “There Goes The Neighborhood” and “Dress Code” are 1-2 punch in the chops. Take a listen:
from 1982’s Cutest Band in Hardcore 12″

Chronic Sick - Dress Code.mp3
Chronic Sick - Public Suicide.mp3
Chronic Sick - Man Rape Blues.mp3
Chronic Sick - Mucho Macho.mp3
Chronic Sick - Pain for Profit.mp3
from 1983’s self-titled 7″
Chronic Sick - Reagan Bands.mp3

Me no likey. Idiots they is.
The 12″ is amazing, one of the best obscurities from the early American Hardcore era. I tracked it down when Scott at strangereaction.com posted like two years ago, and I immediately fell in love with the stuff. I can’t fully understand the lyrics, but as a read somewhere, they’re kinda racist or homophobe, ain’t them?
yeah, i’m not a real big fan of celebrating old obscure hardcore bands whose major point of interest is their bigoted socio-political stance.
career suicide covers blood type x
has anyone heard this punk band called “vile,” parts unknown reissued there 12 inch

I love how if anyone hears the word “nigger” uttered by someone who is not Black, the speaker is immediately pigeonholed as a racist. Are none of you familiar with “sarcasm” and “irony” (often combining to form “ironic sarcasm”)? It puts me in mind of when I was living in Kentucky in the early 90’s, and my then-girlfriend’s brother — a budding young straight-edge nusiance — asked me how I could listen to Reagan Youth. After all, they say “heil” in one of their songs, so they must be Nazis (obviously).
Give the lyrics another listen.
Oh, and thanks for posting these songs. Greatly appreciated. Part of Jerseycore history.
It’s pretty obvious these guys were all about messing
with people’s heads, as was the style at the time. It’s
meant to get a knee-jerk reaction out of people and even
today it still works. Ya can’t blame people for falling
for it. Like FEAR or the Fuck-Ups(SF).
Ive never seen your blog but this is fucking incredible.
I salute you!

That’s the same shit as when F (Florida) or FU’s from Boston get bashed for their fake pro-Reagan stance. MRR type PC bullshit. Pay attention to the music instead.
Damn, you wouldn’t believe how long I’ve beeen hunting this 12″ and how often I let it slip through my fingers. The ex-label boss is rumored to have a full box of them still in his closet, btw.
Eric, seems like you need to ban Mike Rush/AnalOwl. Once again he’s here making posts under my name.
Awesome post by the way
!
i have the 12′ since 15 years but i ve never heard
the ep and less more the demo tape it s still awesome
in 2007 they were very good and a good band of wankers
so forget some lyrics and some “cross” on the pix 12′

I don’t see the supposed “sarcasm” or “irony” in the lyrics of “There Goes The Neighborhood”. My wife is black and I don’t think she’d see it either if I played it for her. Yes, musically the song is great but I can’t overlook the lyrics and therefore justify listening to it based on just that. If an old band member can give a clear explanation as to what they really meant by the song, I’d like to hear it.
Anon,
There’s no reason to object what you’re sayin’ about the offence for its own sake. I guess that in the early years of Lo-fi, DIY, suburban US Hardcore, some bands tried to differ from the political righteousness inherent to the genre, by rejecting any trace of social awareness.
There’s absolutely no reason to dismiss anyone by his/her colour, sex or any matter.

To the person asking about Vile, they were from Boston and while differing significantly in sound from Chronic Sick, were also pretty heavy with “PC-baiting” or whatever you wanna call it (also having thrown out the word “nigger” in the song “hot piece”). they did one 12″, “Solutions” which has been reissued as noted by parts unknown but is currently unavailable. Their story is pretty funny and can be found in the LP liner notes as well as i think on kill from the heart.
In part of “There Goes the Neighborhood” the lyrics say something along the lines of “Oh come on mom its only a nigger.” That led me to think that the song is from a racist mom bitching about blacks entering a white neighborhood perspective.
I can’t understand all of the song’s lyrics but thats what I take from it.
