Something I Learned Today

Punk Rock and Other Assorted Bullshit

Monsula

A couple of weeks back I received a request for some Monsula, which caused me to drag out my only record by them, their 1990 Nickel EP on Lookout. When this came out I gave it short shrift, playing it once and immediately boxing it. When I pulled it out for a listen awhile back I couldn’t even remember what it sounded like. Surprisingly, it wasn’t the poppy crap I was expecting. Instead it was catchy, melodic hardcore with distinct DC/emo influence. Well worth a listen. I think I’ll track down their 1992 Sanitized LP and see what else I may have missed out on.

Throughout the late 80s/early 90s I didn’t really buy any music since my roommate bought a bunch and I recall listening to the first LP (Structure?) back then. When I visited SF I figured I should go to Gilman (or whatever it’s called) and Monsula happened to be playing. Or was it Scherzo?? Sometimes the Lookout bands run together. Never heard the 7″ though.

Good E.P., Razors being the standout track, I love that song. It’s the best song on Sanitized too.

Three out of the four songs on this E.P. are 2 minutes 43 seconds long, very strange.

I love it! I did a post on the same 7″ a good while back with similar thoughts: it stands the test of time, which for some reason seemed unlikely. Great stuff.

Man, I have this 7″ and I never bothered to listen to it. Got in a lot or something. Don’t know anymore.

Anyway, surprised is the best description indeed. Should have listened to this earlier. Thanks for posting this!

Members of Monsula went on to play in Lookout! Records URANIUM 9-VOLT (as well as members of Sawhorse, Pinhead Gunpowder, and Underside). Check them out as well, pretty cool stuff.
