Motorhead

Lemmy

I’m in a Motorhead mood tonight and I don’t give a fuck what all y’all think. I’ve been meaning to post the ‘Head for awhile, but never had a hook until I saw this:

Motorhead to sponsor youth soccer team

Fuckin’ A right. The snaggletooth logo, “Ace of Spades”, hell, the games over before the other team even takes the field. I was 13 when I first heard Motorhead (courtesy the Young Ones) and was completely blown away - I purchased the bands No Remorse a day later. Below are a dozen or so of my favorite tracks from the “Dirtiest (and loudest) Band in Rock ‘n’ Roll”. Predictably, I’m most keen on the band’s classic lineup of Lemmy, Philthy Taylor, and Fast Eddie Clarke. It doesn’t get much better than Ace of Spades or Overkill. I’ve still included a couple from the latter years. Anyone needing some background on the band’s 30+ year history should check the Motorhead wikipedia entry or the official website. Better yet, pickup the 5 disc Stone Deaf Forever boxset and read the booklet.

Site Problems

Anyone else having issues loading this site? It’s been sporadic for me all day, and I’m trying to determine if it’s my issue, or an issue with my host. If you’ve been having problems let me know (and let me know how long). My hosting has been pretty up and down the past month or so.

Back after Thanksgiving

I had hoped to squeeze another post in before I left for the holiday, but it doesn’t look likes it going to happen. I’ll be back early next week. I’d ask for recommendations on good record stores in the Houston area, but the chance of me breaking free of family obligations long enought to go hunting is pretty low. Hope everyone has a nice Thanksgiving (where applicable)

Impatient Youth

null

Impatient Youth were almost featured here a ways back. I had the tracks ready to go only to find that Strange Reaction had just posted the exact record an hour or two before I was ready to post. Well, now that Scott has moved on to bigger and better things I’ve decided to finally go ahead with my own (Impatient) Youth writeup. Not that I have much information on the band. Impatent Youth were a San Francisco band active in the late ’70’s/early 80’s. The band managed one 6-song 7″ and an appearance on Alternative Tentacles’ Not So Quiet on the Western Front compilation before going silent.

The vaults were full though, and in the late 80’s Lost & Found released a full LP of tracks from 1977-1980 as Don’t Listen. A year later the Frontline 7″ consisting of primae 1978 material was included in the Lost & Found 4 7″ box set. Around that same time Billy Ray Martin put Impatient Youth back together, releasing new material. I don’t know about the later stuff, but the archive material is melodic, infectious punk rock here that shouldn’t be passed up.

Frontline 7″ EP

Impatient Youth - Take Me Back Home.mp3
Impatient Youth - Yankee Go Home.mp3

from Not So Quiet on the Western Front

Notes:
– “Business Man” and “Don’t Listen to the Radio” were originally posted on Dressed For The H-Bomb. Thanks to Malfeitor I was finally able to hear this record after searching for it for ages.
– shitty pic, sorry.

V/A - Earth Rapers and Hell Raisers

Earth Rapers & Hell Raisers double 7

Earth Rapers & Hell Raisers was double 7″ compilation put out by the folks at Hippycore in 1990 as benefitf or the Phoenix chapter of Earth First! Lot’s of pissed off, political hardcore from 12 bands and a thick booklet with all sorts of tree hugging commie bullshit of environmental and vegan information. Say what you will about the politics, but every Hippycore release I’ve come across is a labor of love, with thick booklets and tons of educational material. Earth Rapers… isn’t as consistent of a comp as earlier Hippycore comp Metal Gives Us A Headache, but still has some bite to it. The best cuts come from Bent, Machine, Christ on a Crutch, Jesters of Chaos, Seein’ Red, and Samiam. But I’ll let you be the judge of that:

Sins of the Flesh - Technology.mp3
Bent - Intellectual Hypocrites.mp3
Jesters of Chaos - Nuclear Delicacies.mp3
Pissed Happy Children - Graveyard at Sea.mp3
Reality Control - Hold My Breath.mp3
Conspiracy of Equals - Gender Slavery.mp3
Machine - Blind Man’s Holiday.mp3
Samiam - Insightful.mp3
Pleasant Valley Children - Fuck Kill Destroy.mp3
Pollution Circus - Lenny’s Song.mp3
Seein’ Red - Earth First.mp3
Christ on a Crutch - Christian’s Crack Diary.mp3

RIP Larissa Strickland

Larissa Strickland

Although the news has now become fairly well braodcast on other outlets I still wanted to take a moment to remember Larissa Strickland. Details are sketchy, but Strickland apparently OD’d on Xanax last month. I didn’t know you could do that, but whatever. Strickland was the lead singer in early 80’s Detroit band L-Seven, but is better known as the guitarist for the Laughing Hyenas. Her unique playing style helped define the Hyenas raging noise/blues post “whatever” sound over the course of a dozen years. Noisy and tortured, yet oddly beautiful. Lullaby and Goodnight, Larissa…

The Hookers

I considered adding The Hookers cover of “Halloween” to my Halloween mix post, but thought better of it. Why? Well, The Hookers really deserve a post of their own. I can’t think of band that has a cruder, more over the top level of misdirected machismo running through their body of work than this Lexington, KY quartet. Not that that’s a bad thing though. It’s kind of entertaining to hear songs that beat you over the head with ham-fisted wanna be metal lyrics celebrating Satan, sluts, evil, dope, and sexual prowess. And really, the music does rock - think early Nashville Pussy minus all the sophistication (vocalist Adam “Rock and Roll Outlaw” Neal was the original drummer for Nashville Pussy).

It all comes together on the band’s two shining moments - 1997’s Satan’s Highway LP and the 1998 split 10″/CD with Electric Frankenstein. Both releases delivered a mix of hard driving metal tinged punk, goofball braggadocio, and throat shredding vocals that really does kick ass - you simply can’t deny the greatness of tracks such as “Rock ‘n’ Roll Motherfucker” and “Tear You Apart”. I hopped off The Hookers bandwagon after these two releases, ignoring subsequent releases like Black Visions of Crimson Glory. So someone clue me in - this was all a joke, right? I mean, a band that covers Spinal Tap (”Tonight I’m Gonna Rock You Tonight”) has to be laughing with us…

from their debut 7″
The Hookers- Kiss My Fuckin’ Ass.mp3

from Satan’s Highway
The Hookers - Get Fucked.mp3
The Hookers - Tear You Apart.mp3
The Hookers - We Don’t Fuck Around.mp3
