Stiphnoyds

A couple more great Portland, Oregon punk rock tracks here, this time from The Stiphnoyds. These guys would release a 3 song 7″ on Greg Sage’s Trap Records in late 1979-early 1980 along with a couple of tracks on the 10/29/79 Portland comp. The songs are rough and cool, with a great shock/stun guitar sound. This was reissued on Sage’s Zeno Records in 2001 along with other Trap singles (Wipers, Sado-Nation, Neo Boys) as the History of Portland Punk (which is where these tracks are from). The original disc is now out of print, but you can buy a CD-R of the material direct from Zeno for $6. Not too bad at all. Rave Up also reissued the 7 inch along with a good sounding but not terribly essential live set from 1979 on one LP back in 2002 (you can still grab that one from Interpunk). The band briefly reformed in a couple of years back and even had their own website for awhile, but all traces now appear to be gone. Any more info out there?

Another one of them “used to have but didn’t like so off they go”. But Afraid To The Russians is pretty damn good now when I listen to it again.
i fucking love it. ive been looking for a *cheap* copy for years.
“Mom’s a Fake” slays me every time - the excellent “lead snare” and awesome supersonic guitar fills. It’s totally frantic and bratty. “Russians” is good, too, but I don’t think “Radiation” lives up to the rest - it’s more in line with the live 10-29-79 track you posted - but let’s not be ungrateful.
Thanks a lot for these! What the hell is a stiphnoyd, anyway?
I’m probably telling you what you may know already, but in case I’m not, there’s a 2 page piece in on the ‘Noyds in the latest issue of Ugly Things (http://www.ugly-things.com). The piece includes am interview with Steve DeShazer (singer) and Bryan Wilson (bass).
Does anyone have the lyrics of these songs? I’ve been looking for the lyrics of “Afraid of the Russians” for a while now but I can’t find them anywhere. Would be appreciated!
A friend gave me a batch of 7″ vinyl as a swap, back in the 80s. Amongst it was a copy of ‘Afraid of the Russians/Mom’s a Fake’. I didn’t even listen to it for a few years then rediscovered it in the late 90s and played it. Wow! Brillant stuff, and bery like a lot of our English punk bands from the back end of the original punk scene.
Wonder how it found its way to Leeds, England, being such a ‘local’ record?
