Neurosis - Aberration

I thought about starting this post with a comment about how the sound of Neurosis has changed over the years, but then realized I have no idea what they sound like now. Last I heard of Neurosis was 1993’s Enemy of the Sun, and by that point my short attention span couldn’t get around the sprawling prog-metal that the group was churning out. Not to say I didn’t appreciate the changes in the band’s sound from the heavy thrash of 1988’s Pain of Mind to the ambitious soundscapes captured on 1992’s monstrous Souls At Zero, but a little went a long way. 1989’s Aberration EP on Lookout is a decent capture of the band before their metamorphisis began. The “A” side contains two rough, mid-tempo metalcore tracks, the flip a longer, more interesting cut. I can only imagine that this sounds primitive by comparison to their latter day material, but it still works for me.

Awesome. This single and the “Souls at Zero” LPs are my favorite Neurosis releases.

This blew my socks off when i first heard it - the tension & madness in ‘pollution’ is just fantastic! ‘Pain of mind’ was equally good too I thought - great fierce playing with fantastic dynamics…’double edged sword’ is the killer track…then after that(for me at least) they become very unexciting & pretty damn dull…Great post - I’ve been waiting for this for ages!

These tracks rage! They bring an image of crusties head banging and shaking their fists.

My favorte NEUROSIS stuff. I actually won this 7″ in a game of pool with a loud-mouthed crust girl. I tried to win her disorder and discharge patch covered ass-flap the next game but to no avail. Oh well……good record though.

Nice post! The change that Neurosis made reminds me of how The Boredoms went from crusty to spacey. I had this 7″ on a cassette comp, good to have it back in “digital”.

i have bought every single neurosis release since pain of mind/alchemy. I never minded the growth. when other bands vanished neurosis kept pushing themselves. I always loved this 7″ for its crust/primitive aesthetic. one of a kind band

Right arm! I don’t have to bust out this vinyl anymore.
Great stuff. My favorite was always Pain of Mind. They
ripped that shit live at Gilman.
