Shit Dogs

Although the writing doesn’t demonstrate it, I often spend several weeks ruminating over posts, playing tracks, and doing research before sitting down to write a post. One of the major frustrations I encounter is having to toss a post when it’s discovered that another blog has beaten you to the punch. With all of the punk related blogs out there now it’s happening more and more often. Even though it’s not an mp3 blog, Agony Shorthand always seems to be one step ahead of me. Hinman usually hits the nail on the head with spot on reviews and great writing style, often leaving me standing with my cock in my hand. Well, fuck it. For the umpteenth time I’ve been trumped, this time when it comes to the Shit Dogs World War III compilation on Italian label Rave Up. Most of you are aware of the Shit Dogs as a result of their inclusion on the Killed By Death series. Rave Up has compiled the Baton Rouge, Louisiana band’s 1980 History of Cheese EP, 1981’s You Bet 7″, and the Dog Style LP all on release. 22 tracks of lo-fi goof rock that gets compared to the Ramones or The Eat. I think you can still get this one, along with other choice reissues of Louisian greats The Skinnies and Toxin III. Some samples

Thanks for this great post. Very Ramones, down to the vox; I’m hearing some Saints in there too. Sure Hinman may have beat you to the punch, but where else can you actually hear these songs?

Any chance of getting “Under Slittery Moons” or “Flippin’ Burgers?”
I meant “Slithery”
Blake - you got it.
man, oh man, do you rock. i’m from baton rouge, and was fortunate enough to see the ‘dogs many many times. i went to a dave brock fronted “hawkwind” in the mid 90’s in new orleans at the “howlin’ wolf”, and most of the shitdog crew were there. i got pretty loaded and hassled the fuck out of the boys to re-release their stuff on cd. didn’t seem to work out. thanks a billion…blake
Hey !
I used to work with Bill 16 yrs ago
he always talked about his band but no longer had any of the records
Shit Dogs name story had something to do with Iranian student protests in baton rouge before the arrest as he
always told it
I lived in Baton Rouge in the early 80s, went to LSU, and saw these guys many times. Raw, rowdy and very FU punk. If you did too, send me an e-mail: charliestreet@gmail.com
I lived across the street from Izzy, the lead guitarist. RIP. Anyway, I saw several “reunion” shows. Definitely fun and rockin’. I have their vinyl collection somewhere around here.
I was at LSU from 1981 - 1988 (both as student and as staff member). I found these guys in my freshman year and saw them many times. I still have all of there stuff somewhere. I used to get a friend of mine to play them on KLSU in the early hours after The Bayou closed for the night. He had a late show and the powers that ran the station must not have been awake to hear it.
I’m very glad to have found some of their MP3s on the net.
Bill Mallory (Wheelie Bloodtongue)- bassist, songwriter of The Shitdogs- died this morning. In memorium- http://www.myspace.com/shitdogs
check out some good old-school punk
Oh, those shitty days of yore! Rest well Bill and Izzy. May you two create some good shit in the sky!
I’m truly fucking bummed. Bill Mallory was like a GOD to me. He turned me on to Amon Duul, Velvet Underground, Terry Riley and most of all HAWKWIND! Have a good TRiP and a better FaLL Bill, Love Zoomer
We were fortunate enough to have had Bill as our neighbor for the past 5 yrs or so. He was just a wonderful person, always smiling and friendly.. Rest well Bill.. You will be greatly missed!!
I’m stunned. I just went Googling for Bill, and found this. IS he really gone?
Alive or not, a GREAT guy. We used to have a lot of fun talking to truck drivers on the cb radio, crackin’ up.
Leisure Landing, The Bayou, WPRG - KLSU - gigs .. that’s where I know Bill.
