Something I Learned Today

Punk Rock and Other Assorted Bullshit

The A.D.’s

Not to be confused with the Adolescents subset the ADZ, the A.D.’s were from Albany, NY and released a total of 3 singles from 1979 to 1982. I know nothing about the band, and can’t seem to find any information on the band or their material. The “A” side from their 1979 debut single “Living Downtown” was comped on Backseat Love, a Killed By Death style comp featuring so-called “power pop”. Don’t let that tag scare you off, “Living Downtown” has a nice raw guitar riff that ain’t close to being limp pop. The “B” side “Testing” may even be better than the flip, a fast & chunky punk cut that smokes . Anyone with info on the AD’s please fill in the blanks!

hey - the AD were out of Albany NY. The singer, a swell guy named Jim Furlong runs a vinyl shop there called last vestige. They prob still have some AD’s stuff available for those that want more. The bassist, whose name was mark i think ran a label, blue lunch and had his own studio. He was later in a 10k maniacs type band called Mambo X.
If memory serves they were on a couple of local comp albums, Hudson Rock and maybe live at 288.

If anyone has more, I’d love to hear “more than once”, it used to get a lot of local college radio play.

An exemplary post about an exemplary band. The ADs paved sonic territory for Blotto and other Albany bands.

    Hello,

Yeah, the AD’s had a great single here. I saw them quite a few times when Albany had amusic movement. I saw them try “Ring of Fire” maybe warming up for Iggy Pop (again, I think - it was a long time ago) at JB Scott’s as well as at various spots in Albany. Last Vestige still has a place in Saratoga - don’t know about Albany.

The fellow who sang for the AD’s had an extra part (as did I) in “Ironweed” with Jack Nicholson and Meryl Strep when it was filming in downtown Albany.

That’s about it for Albany stories.

I can remember when they played at CBGB’s. At the time Jimmy was dating my sister. Great guy! Fun time.

The ADs had another single called “Alone Again” that was an excellent tune. It came out after Livin’ Downtown (which I think was their first single). They played the Chateau Lounge in Albany a lot. Local college radio station WCDB-FM (of SUNY Albany) played their music often. THe guitarist’s last name was Nardo, and I remember he played a wicked guitar. Once when I saw them at the Chateau Lounge (probably around 1982), he was playing like crazy while crawling on the bar and on top of the amps. Pretty entertaining. They were the old timers among the albany local music scene and were looked up to by a lot of the newer bands. Jim Furlong is one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet (I only met him a few times, the last time in his record shop on Quail Street in Albany), but he was a real good guy.

I saw Mambo-X in Albany a couple times in ‘86-’87. Great guitar riffs and Erin O’Hara’s singing was mesmorizing. Next time I’m Albany I’ll have to go to LastVestige.
