Punk Rock and Other Assorted Bullshit

Kilslug

Even when I’m busy I’ll always try to make time for a request, especially a weird one. “Weird” is an understatement when it comes to Kilslug, a Boston based group of psychos who specialized in sludgy, anti-social dirges. They released two 7″s and and an LP (on Taang!) of sluggish noise before morphing into Upsidedown Cross. I can’t find much info on the band other than numerous reports that lead singer Larry Lifeless was/is a genuine menace to society. Someone fill in the blanks!

Boston’s greatest band, haven’t heard this in years. Thanks!

here’s a funny KilSlug story. They were opening an all-ages matinee at TT the Bear’s in Cambridge, only three of the band members were MIA, including Larry. Since time was short, three fill-ins were recruited and did a pretty good job. During the last song, the three KilSluggers showed up, got on the stage and took the instruments from the fill-ins without missing a beat and finished the song. A great moment in rock history.

i have (and love) the album, but have been waiting years to hear either of these. saw them in connecticut but i have only hazy memories of it. i think they were burning stuff. a couple of the guys were in the groinoids, who had two great songs on the boston, not l.a. and unsafe at any speed comps. would love more info on them, too. thanks for the post.

    Hey Al,
I was at that show. Larry and cheeseball
were’nt in the club and they were late for their set. I went up and played bass
and some other guy started singing.
after 2 or 3 songs, they both walked in and took over the stage from us. Larry
then proceeded to spray the crowd with pigs blood from a fire exstinguisher.
They were late cos’ they were going around butcher shops trying to get someone to fill the canister. After that, the show was shut down

Prior to KilSlug, Larry sang for The Sickness. They released a lovely little 7″ called “Corpse Monger” in 1981.

  7. Pogel February 22nd, 2006 4:49 pm

Oh the beauty of punk diversity and originality. These guys spook me.

  8. noah February 25th, 2006 9:12 am

Larry Lifeless is now the singer for Adolf Satan
He is the biggest alcoholic of all time
their music is atrocious but watching him try to choke screams out of his ruined vocal chords is kinda like watching a demolition derby

  9. blinky March 1st, 2006 3:30 am

At other times these guys were known as the ‘Groinoids’ and ‘the Sickness’. Both had releases. The Groinoids have arguably the worst song on ‘Boston Not LA’ (or is it the ‘Decadence’ number the worst?) and the sickness have at least one great 7″.

Boston legends, I saw the Groinoids well past “the day” (’88?) at a house party and they ruled!!

  10. larry kelley March 1st, 2006 10:47 pm

i played in this band i was one of the 37 other guitar players
it was great remember this band was a family
it mostly started with big daddy and larry lifeless in the band the sickness and then this band started with ty rico larry bigdaddy and then it moved on to the best line up with the remnants of the groinoids/morticiamourge big daddy on drums rico on guitar cheesely on bass mongoloid on the other guitar
i having played with cheese and bigdaddy joined as monges replacement
it was the great playing with them in their prime
    since then we had
    groinoidspart 2
    ointment
larry had upside down cross and now he had the ever popular ADOLF SATAN
i my self cleaned up and have a band called nothing
its cool to see this page on the most underground band ever from boston
i mean who uses a smoke machine to do a live broadcast at a radio station?

When I was just shy of sweet 16 I hung out a bit at the kilslug house. Larry Lifeless almost killed me for spilling his seedy weed on the kitcen floor. Rubber Fox and Cheesly held him back. I vaguely remember someone named Mongoloid. Of course I remember Big Daddy, Rico Petroleum. They used tubesocks to wipe thier asses at that house. And I remember YOU, Larry Kelly! I can’t believe yer still alive!
I was totally impressed when Rico and Cheesly told me they had sold their hair for beer money. They jumped in unison three times and put their heads together shouting “YER A HOSS’S ARSE!”, and their heads together DID look just like a horse’s ass. They were the punkest. Cheesly was my favorite because he admitted that he liked the Smiths , too. A very important moment in my formative years!

There is also a 5 song cassette called “The Curse” (only song I recall off the top of my head is “Elizabeth”)

In a very old issue of Forced Exposure that blew out of the pickup when I was moving there was an alleged discography that mentioned 3 tapes called something along the lines of “The Very Best of Kilslug” , “Son of the Very Best of Kilslug” and “The Son of the Son of the Best of Kilslug” or something along those lines but I’ve never been able to locate them even after pestering Charlie Infection and Al Quint (hi Al) for years to find them for me - I don’t really know if they exist.

One of my proudest achievements in life was when our band Insanicide opened for Kilslug in Portland Maine.

    check this

Stumbling across this made my day! I’m a big a Kilslug/Larry Lifeless fan as your’re going to get, so to see some discussion is great.

I actually uploaded my entire LL collection onto the file sharing programme Soulseek a couple of years ago. I’d imagine/hope some of the following is still being shared on there.

    The Sickness - “Corpsemonger” b/w “Regurgation” 7″
Kilslug - “Warlocks, Witches, Demons” 7″
    Kilslug - “Necktie Party” 7″
    Kilslug - “A Curse” CS
Kilslug - “Answer The Call” LP
Kilslug - Live on WJLU radio (unreleased)
Upsidedown Cross - “Upsidedown Cross” LP
    Upsidedown Cross - “Evilution” CD
    Upsidedown Cross - “Witchcraft” 10″
    Upsidedown Cross/Sloth - split 7″
    Angry Hate/Sloth - split 7″
    Angry Hate/Sloth - split 12″
Angry Hate - “Bad Mood” 7″ (unreleased)
    Adolf Satan - demo

The only things I didn’t upload where Kilslug lives recorded, incidentally, by someone who has already posted here!

The only additions to LL’s discography in the last couple of years are :
Adolf Satan - “Adolf Satan” CD
Angry Hate - “Bad Mood” on V/A “13 Bands Who Think Your’re Gay” LP
Kilslug - “Glowing Kanibals” on V/A “13 Bands Who Think Your’re Gay” LP

I’m told by a reliable source of several unreleased LL recordings, mainly with Kilslug, that for one reason or another will probably never released which is totally frustrating.

Lastly, if anybody has any live recordings, shirts, flyers, or anything else of interest they’d part with, please get in touch. Thanks.

Kilslug/Upsidedown Cross stayed at my flat in San Francisco for a weekend back in 91. I mostly remember Larry popping pills and beer, playing darts in my kitchen in his underwear. Cheez had this one front tooth that had rotted down to a scragly point. They also had this keyboard player with scoliosis called “professor”. They were a serious trip. Eventually I kicked em out cause Cheez kept calling all the black people on my block “monkeys”.

What was that song that went

    The taste of blood
    it’s cheaper than mud
    and it’s cheaper than dirt
    when it starts to squirt
I put it in a cup
    and offer it up
and then I make it rain
    I make it rain
    I make it rain
    I make it rain

    MAKE IT RAAAAAAIIINN!!

    I love that song!

There’s no way I’d have had them stop at my house! Fuck that!

Anyway, that song is - funnily enough - ‘Make It Rain’.

Your blog fucking rules. I’ve been looking for a site with punk/post punk shit. Those were the days my friend. I do remember reading about Kilslug back in the day, but never heard their stuff. Thanks for the downloads, you’re doing an excellent job.

  19. Michael Day April 6th, 2006 10:52 pm

    Kenny and Al,
I was at that show too. There wasn’t any pigs blood at all or else I would have been covered in it. I think they’d just gone to the liquor store and didn’t get back in time.

The transition was indeed seamless though. Genius. And that ended up being their last song, because Mike Gitter stopped their set. I think he was just pissed off that they had disappeared and he proceeded to have a hissy fit.

Can either of you remember who they were opening up for? In my mind, it was the Rollins Band. I remember that Henry did two shows there on the same day. An all-ages one, and an over-18’s one or something, with different opening bands. This would have been the over-18’s show - if it was indeed the same day I was thinking of.

  20. larry kelley May 10th, 2006 3:56 am

they went to fill the fire ext with piss that why they didnt get back in time

the worst kilslug situation is when we were in biloxi and we played with our new friends dc3 dez cadenas band
the show was on a monday night and larry was in great form he cornered every one in the place to one side of the room and took this girls shirt and dumped a bucket of trash down it
we didnt know at the time that this girl was supposed to put us up in new orleans for the next three day and was having us play at her club too
    she was not impressed
she called every one we had a show with the rest of the tour and told them what assholes we were

the worst part about it before larry and me broke this huge mirror we took down from the b room so dc3 could watch themselves play
    was what larry was saying
we have sara pryor in the trunk of our car
    50 cents to see sara
    she was a good fuck

wel sara pryor was a famous missing girl case from wayland ma luckily know one knew who she was if he had done that in mass forget it
we would still be in jail………

    also who is is miray?
    larry kelley

Ain’t it funny to hear all the younglings talking about Kilsug when 20 years ago we slugged the killers while killing the slugs.

  34. rico October 26th, 2006 9:56 pm

hello aline, everyone., this is a really cool sight, is that the nadine i know? just saw mark k. @ a memorial service for mark giroux., sorry to say. larry k., bigd., artie, miss lyn @ some other friends were also there. Rico - did that band SNATCH you did with the drummer from Vile record anything?

  39. rico November 3rd, 2006 7:57 pm

hello gillham - snatch was joe (vile) drums, ritchie (the missionaries) guit., chris k bass, rob d voc. they made a cd before i got involved, but not really. i had no band after chum, was trying to help bratface w/ some bookings & meddling into some writting when i was reintroduced to joe & met the guys too. we were fast friends (a real change - friendly., as are the chum & bratface guys). i was like a “closer” for some shows. a groinoids song or two, a new jam, a couple parties & a club or two. this became nastyfoot. another whole story, w/ pretty sharp, simple riffs, & funny lyrics mostly written by joe. snatch was a little on the spacey side. i feel like i’m writting a book but this sight is a kick.

  40. rico November 3rd, 2006 8:14 pm

cannot get the downloads to work, prob my mistake. anyway, email me. we should talk on the phone about the other stuff. ricoslugnoid@yahoo.com

  41. Aline November 3rd, 2006 9:31 pm

Rico, RAR files are compressed, you need WinRAR to exract files; then you get the mp3.

  42. rico November 3rd, 2006 10:54 pm

i thought rar means rare. i am retarded. dont know how. any way, about these stories. larry k played a much larger part through the bands than his comment “1 of 37″ bugged me a little. there was yet another band called mortisha’s morge that he supported & played in. (mong, cheeze, & various others) during slug’s earlier times they were almost enimies, hated me for double band action, dissolved the groinoids w/ last show @ chets last call. no communication big daddy was a satalite member of kilslug only, we had other people on bass @ times but he “had it” we called him “big daddy” behind his back for “his know it all” personality. he caught on,

  43. GILLHAM November 3rd, 2006 11:27 pm

Thanks for the info on Snatch. I’d been wondering …

Just checked out the Padded Hell stuff on myspace. Pretty bad, which is good. Haha. I’ll check back for updates.

I’ll send you an email anyway. My email address is : blackoperations_uk@hotmail.com

side of split LP with Sloth

To get all of these files, you have to download WinRar. Here : http://www.download-zone-free.com/winrar/

Once you’ve installed winrar, download the links to your desktop or wherever, right click, ‘extract to (whatever name of file is)’, it’ll do the rest, and the folder will appear.

  46. rico November 4th, 2006 12:04 am

(cont) loved it. when slug had some upcomming gigs or a roadtrip or something, we had only me & larry again. by now, most quallified players, possible recruits knew better after we had gone few so many members & seeming even more like a joke. we were like circus music to a failing social experiment for complete outcasts. my favorite period. then to realgn , we needed players.a very dicey merge then occured, bringing all together. key players from groinoids, sickness w/ big daddy back to drums again (he was bass for sickness, drums for groinoids, bass @ times for slug, drums for kilslug & the later groinoids lineup). sam macavie(impactunit, cloe) & nate & jason shapiro (jaxt&vitamin, celebrity skin (bros) also gave us muscle when needed like kenny chambers & alot of others @ times. @ the channel & some other times i would put up the guit for others to lead out. my leads are still not much better than then. what a blast!!! maybee 37 is true but larry k was a key player & is a friend for life to me. the music was a byproduct, got even more silly later.

  47. rico November 4th, 2006 12:47 am

cheeze snuck out & auditioned for vile. he was the 1st one to “step-out” then resented us for slug. the biggest loss was that the sickness never kept going. they were the whole inspiration. lots of songs other than the 7″ live @ cbgb’s & more on tape etc. their last two shows were @ the channel opening for the plasmatics newyears eve 81-82 or 82-83 cant exactly remeber.many songs. the goinoids also had alot, we wrote about 25 songs in our 1st week & recorded 5 for notla, then more later, then more w/ 2nd lineup. some live tapes, videos of both. point is, too slow. we all wanted to play more often, no mmt. the bands were like burning matches.

  50. rico November 6th, 2006 12:15 am

also larry k was a constant thoughout groinoids2. open a sight for groinoids, sickness. does this run out of space? vile, missionaries, white knuckle, nastyfoot, chum(became the tumors.,me, wayne from fu’s-stawdogs, norman from unclemeat&left nut, paul & kevin from minutes to go, paul did random road mofo). there’s a pre-vile chonology too, plus other un-slug related stories .

  51. rico November 6th, 2006 12:26 am

  55. larry kelley November 7th, 2006 6:46 pm

wow rico nadine sammy wow its weird some people alluded to the fact that i might be dead geezzzz i wonder why

kilslug was my favorite band me and johnny bluetile use to yell up to ty the drummer from way way back at his window to give us a few curse will fall tapes and me and johnny would go out and force people to buy the tape most of the buyers really didnt want to buy the tape but it was the only way to get rid of us

as a person with a guitar and an amp but coulnt play i knew the only band that i could and would play for is slug and after a long story i ended up in the band

i mean cmom who woulnt want te be in a band with a song that starts off with the lines

“cant go to church today i gotta blow some one away”

and the way he said it…….

rico and big daddy were the ones that kept me around

big d might be older and says what ever but trust me its all true and stranger that he could ever say…….

and there is a lot of history here….

and yes a big part of slug has just left us
    mark giroux

soon i hope to convince rico jay and larry to do another show (me too of course)i hope

sammy what do you think would any one go?
    care?

we could only do it if gillham flew in………

i know they can black out shit face and end up not at home but san fran?

    just wondering

  57. rico November 10th, 2006 1:26 am

yes they did theres a comment way up from some cickabout it. cross used a uhaul truck w/ 1/2 the band in the unconnected back. glad i missed it, all over the place, poor planning.

  58. rico November 10th, 2006 1:36 am

the tt’s show w/ the change of hands mid-set, was fillins; kenny chambers, sam (impact unit, chloe, etc.) & al simeone singing to be clear. this kind of thing was not uncommon for us.

  59. Cwebb November 10th, 2006 5:28 pm

I saw Kilslug in ‘83 at the VFW hall in the North End. They opened for Agnostic Front. That was a great show and a great time.

  66. Jordan Kratz November 19th, 2006 10:22 am

Hello Rico and others who know me.
Larry I am well and doing good.My current band is Big Meat Hammer here in Portland.I have a new band as well with some of my old Lynn friends called Jordan & The Lynn Rebels. That will be ready to play in early spring.
that was the YMCA on Huntington.I remember seeing Agnostic there.

Glad to see you guys are still with us as many of my old buddies aren’t any more.If you ever do a Kilslug show again let me know so I can come down to Boston to see you.
    Bye, Jordan

  67. Cwebb November 19th, 2006 1:08 pm

    Hey Rico and Larry,

I can’t remember where the building was exactly but the stage was in the basement of the building. It was actually a really good stage and a big floor area as I recall. Outside there was a set stone steps that led to the entrance of the building.

There was one other local band that opened the show. Really young guys, like not a day over 18, and they played a song about the mall. Ha-ha…The shit one remembers!

Everyone was hanging out on the stone steps. I met a lot of people for the first time at that show.

That afternoon had a huge influence on me. I’ll never forget it!

  68. Cwebb November 19th, 2006 1:17 pm

Just wanted to clarify my above statement. The openeing band was good and played a tight set. I didin’t mean to sound like I was trivializing them. I just can’t believe I remembered their song about a mall after all this time!

  69. Jordan Kratz November 20th, 2006 6:38 pm

as fara s i remember that agnostic front show was at the huntington y.
i am positive i was there as i remember talking to some of the agnostic front that day.

    OMS! (oh my satan!)

i have been looking 4 Kilslug shit (heh) for over 10 yearz!
I had “make it rain” (i alwayz thought it was, “a taste of blood”) on a mix TAPE(ha! member thoze?) back in the day.

    deva in her best-est ol lady voice sayz;
“back in OUR time, we didn’t have cd’z!”
“We used what us old folks called (spoken slow & careful) ca ssette taapes.”
    ((wink wink))

my friend Alice (the Ultras - L.A. Cali band)
    turned me on to em!

It was funny, i was listening to my ‘mix tape’ (gigglez) while gettin ready to go out. Taste of Blood came on, and this guy i had been sharing make up & a mirror with, seemed to be shocked as shit for a few, tellz me that he (Jason Shapiro) used 2 b in that band! (lol)

    (boy was he a trip!)
My girl friend Ben (my clam) and myself used to love sum of the trippy ass shit he would say. I (2 this day) have my old (personal) writting books with many a Jason/Ladybug quotes.

anyone able 2 help a bitch out (the “bitch” bein ME of COURSE!) w/a download of “taste of blood/make it rain”?

    would make my year!??!

    danka!

    me
    {kelli~deva}

Glemmy is when you are alone with your toilet brush, or in Big Daddy’s case when he and his toilet brush have an audience.

And I went to a party with Kilslug, I think Bob White’s birthday party, and they just left me there. I was from Maine and they had my friend with them. I had no idea where I was and I had to rely on the only person being nice to me at the time, Adam Souza. They were swell guys. I found them the next day at Father’s Too at the hotdog fest.

  96. conboy September 24th, 2007 8:52 pm

geez jim rub it in why dont ya:
i was kicked outta insanicide the day before the kilsug show in maine. i knew it would be great.
oh well, thats what missing two practices gets ya!
sorry i stood you up after you walked over in the snow jim. i really didnt do it on purpose.

  98. Brett Milano October 16th, 2007 9:58 am

KILSLUG are MENTIONED atleast FIVE times in Joe S. Harrington’s history-of-rock “Sonic Cool” and there’s actually a PICTURE of Upside Down Cross!!! He equates them with other shock-rockers of the time like AntiSeen and GG Allin (and seems to be generally sympathetic to the cause…)

  99. Steff October 20th, 2007 4:24 pm
