V/A - Murders Among Us

Something a little different here, some straight up New York Hardcore circa 1990. This kind of material was my staple 15+ years ago. Most hasn’t aged well in my opinion, but I always thought this comp ripped. Vermiform and Combined Effort released Murders Among Us in 1990, providing a different look at the NY hardcore scene than the one presented by the Straight Edge/Youth Crew/Revelation world. The best track here is by Absolution; I had forgotten just how good “Dead and Gone” was and how unique sounding it was at the time. The Born Against and Life’s Blood tracks are also great. My only gripe is Nausea - I prefer the band’s crustier sounds as represented on their Extinction LP. Vocalist Amy Miret sounds like a shrill 7 year old girl mixed up on helium and speed on this cut. Regardless, a great compilation.

Absolution - Dead and Gone.mp3
Nausea - Electrodes.mp3
Born Against - The Good Father.mp3
Notes:
> Middle Aged Youth has an excellent post on Life’s Blood for those looking for more info
> My copy of Murders Among Us was stolen years ago. Thanks to reader DK for hooking me up with an excellent rip of the comp.

Great selection. One of the best 7″ comps out there from the time period. Absolution was truly an underrated band outside of NY, and I agree that they had the best track here. LB is one of my favorite bands, obviously (thanks for the link). And I also agree that Nausea sounded better circa “Extinction”. Nice post, all the way around!
absolutely DISagree…that nausea Lp is after al got involved with the band and it sucks…This is the way most original fans/supporters remember nausea…Amy was a great vocalist…thanks for posting this haven’t had it in years…
Funny, this Nausea track was always one of my faves too. (Along with their totally slaughtering song on the “More Songs About Plants and Trees” comp, which blows doors off of just about everything else!) Yep, Amy does sound weirdly helium-inated here, but a smokin’ good tune nonetheless — One that compliments the rest of this (fantastic) comp quite well. I recall buying my copy for $2.20 (!) at the Vermiform merch table the night Born Against played at Middlesex County College. (An evening marred by multiple clashes betwixt the No-Rio crowd and the jock goons who populated many of those moshathons. To say there were a few fights would be an understatement! I think some genius had a gun, or later produced one in the parking lot (great) and the show overall was a festival of bad vibes, enraged dudes in Life of Agony t-shirts, and crying be-mohawked girls. Anyhow, great post!
thanks a lot for this…hadn’t heard that Absolution song in years, one of the best, and Life’s Blood was one of the best bands out then as well. the whole comp is amazing, easily one of the most memorable records from that time period.
Think I picked up a copy when it came out at Venus Records on St. Marks, and probably paid more than $3. Ha. Great Life’s Blood song. This was the 1st vinly appearence from Born Against as well. Never dug the Absolution song as it sounds like dude is singing into a pillow.
Fantastic post in my opinion…I really, really enjoyed that Nausea track, and of course any day I hear Born Against is a good day. I know they’re not really your thing, but any more early Nausea would be greatly appreciated!
That Absolution cut has always been a
favorite of mine. Better production
than their ep. Not knowing any better,
I used to think Chaka sang for them
since his vocal style was so similar to
Djinji’s.
[…] Man, 1990 was a great year for hardcore compilations, especially those in featuring bands from the NYC region. Forever is one of three killer NY/NJ hardcore 7″ comps released in ‘90 (Murders Among Us and Rebuilding being the other two). Forever was released on Irate and features early material from some of the NY/NJ hardcore scene heavies. 5 bands, 5 tracks, featuring posi-core from Turning Point, bilious hardcore from Born Against, and vicious blasts from Rorschach and Citizen’s Arrest. Not to be overlooked, Burn contributes a wild hardcore track that borders on greatness, hindered only by muddy production. One of my favorite comps from my own hardcore heyday: […]
Holy crap. If I only I discovered this before I spent three hours trying to digitally smooth the pops out of the copy I ripped — my 7″ was pretty worn out. I’m actually replacing the mp3s I posted with these. Hope you don’t mind — I’m posting the link to you.
Im a little late posting but i guess its better late than never. I totally agree about this Absolution song, we used to lip sync this song and jump around like maniacs. Whats funny is I was in Vienna in 97′ which is probably the last time ive heard anyone mention this band and I ran into a guy wearing an Absolution hoodie which totally floored me. The rest of the stuff is great as well though and deserves its spotlight…
