V/A - Metal Gives Us A Headache

I can’t remember if I stole this record from a long ago friend or if he gave it to me. From what I remember he hated it and I liked it, and after a long night of drinking it somehow found it’s way home with me. Not that it’s a great coup or anything, but it’s nifty little compilation that was put out on Hippycore in 1988. Metal Gives Us A Headache features 6 politically aware tracks from some off the beaten track bands. If I recall Subvert and Desecration were from Arizona while Dead Silence was out of Colorado and Dissent were from South Dakota. The two “biggest” bands (for MRR readers) were East Bay bands Cringer and Stikky. Each song is preceded with a heartfelt message from the band, some of which are kinda funny sounding now to my cynical ears. Like the other Hippycore records I’ve seen this comes with a nice insert. And like all of the Hippycore records I’ve owned I’ve misplaced the insert at some point. Crap. My favorites here are Dead Silence, Dissent, and Stikky
Subvert - What Does It Mean.mp3
Dissent - Abe Lincoln.mp3
Desecration - In a Childs Eyes.mp3
Dead Silence - Sally.mp3
Cringer - Take Back the Night.mp3
Stikky - I Want to Hear Horns.mp3

I loved SUBVERT the most on that 7″ - superb speedcore. Maybe you can post their *The Madness must end* 7″ in the future - a total killer too.
There is a German pressing of that compilation on SELL OUT ACTIVITIES (most famous for the HERESY *Thanx* 7″), incl. a lyricsheet. In case you need a scan send me a mail.
B.
Stikky is from the South Bay (Gilroy to be exact). Just wanted to let you know. Blatant Localism at its best, just kidding
Great post though. Love yer site!!1
Cool post! I jut picked up the Cringer 7″ on Lookout and it sounds SO different from this track. Way poppier, but still great.
Man, THIS brings back memories. Eric, thanks for putting this up.
An old band of mine played with Dissent when we were in South Dakota. It was a great show, they were a great band, and great guys to boot. I heard one of them passed away a few years ago, but I don’t know if it’s true.
Anyway, it’s good to hear and see this record again!
Hey,
I was 1/2 of Hippycore. This was our first record. For the record, Subvert were from Seattle (the singer moved on to a band called Christdriver). Stikky was from Santa Clara. Cringer was actually from Los Angeles at the time this came out. And yes, Bob, the singer from Dissent, did die a number of years ago.
The handsome devils on the cover are Big Wayne from the South Bay, Jack from Desecration and Hippycore, and Jeff from Last Option.
The Desecration is my fave track.
Nice to see this again, and available on MP3. I downloaded it myself!
Stikky Roolz.
Big Wayne is my hero. Strangely, I heard he died in a knife fight with a little person at a show in Turlock, CA in the late 90s.
RIP Big Wayne.
I’ll bet that he’s still pretty goofy. Poor Big Dead Wayne.
I LEAVE A COMMENT ON THE ANDRE WILLIAMS THREAD. I’M A MR RHYTM FAN FROM ITALY. COME TO MY BLOG, WE HAVE A LOT OF THINGS IN COMMON!
(SORRY, MY BLOG IS IN ITALIANO…)
Joel, this is Michael from Hunger Artist (Joel and Jack put out a 7″ of ours a long time ago, and put up with us for a week in their house!)
How are you? Good to see you up here!
yeah Stikky members lived in Santa Clara and I was thinking of Nasal Sex for some odd reason. I stand corrected. thanks!! LOL. Oh well, too many beers!!
Hey Michael,
Man, it’s great to hear from you. Drop me an email at joel.olson@nau.edu.
Big Wayne is alive and well, but if he did die, I’m sure he would go straight to metal heaven with his friends, Baron Rojo, Fates Warning, and the poser metal band that sings “Posers Must Die!”
“…and the poser metal band that sings Posers Must Die!”
Hey Joel, are you talking about Thrust?!?! It must be sad to some that I know of all those bands you just mentioned, but Metal never gave me a headache. I love the shit - and yes, that includes Thrust! And Fates Warning. Baron Rojo, not so much. Hahaha…
Subvert never came across as good on vinyl as they did live. They used to open for everyone circa late 80’s Seattle/Tacoma. They were ripping and powerful (once you got past the peacecore retoric).
What a frick’n small world. Joel - how ya doing man? It’s been a very long time since those days when I was drumming for Desecration - a lot has changed since then (Dr. Jack for one). Feel free to drop me a line - psmyer@qwest.net.

The world is indeed small, but I wouldn’t want to clean the whole thing at once.
What a fun site to stumble in on! Stikky is still together…we’re just busy doing other stuff too. Still vegan, still metal, still loving Fonzie. Yes.
Love to Joel, Big Wayne, and all hippies. Dave MDC for president.
Peace!

Sally is the best dead silence song ever… it still gets me pumped up… and today I pulled out all their old records and rocked out while cleaning the house… so thanks for the inspiration… steve munsell NC
I am in a financial trouble. When I divorced I saw that I had very little credit history, which was not enough to qualify for a new credit card of my own. All credit cards I have used before were in my husband’s name, so they were not reported to the credit bureaus. I wonder if I can start my own credit file through applying for a secured credit card at
