Really Red

Since virtually everyone else seems to have done a Really Red post (myself included) I figured why not throw this one in the mix. New Strings For Old Puppets is the bands fourth and final 7″, and it may just be my favorite (argue amongst yourselves). Originally released in 1982 on the bands CIA imprint this was briefly available again in the early ’90’s on their discography CD which is also OOP.

Notes:
>Excellent Really Red info at Break My Face
>Teaching You The Fear is regretably the only Really Red in print
>Cover scan courtesy of PunkRock Picture Sleeves
>Now all we need is someone to post the Despise Moral Majority EP, the actual Modern Needs b-side (”White Lie”), and Rest In Pain in full. Get to it.

I was coming up in Houston TX during the classic/glory days of texas punk (78 -81) and saw RR several times. Used to shop at Ronnie’s store for 7″ vinyl.
Glad to see this posting, good stuff!
What an underappreciated band they were and are. What’s the B-Side for Modern Needs?
Scott… The b-side is “White Lies”, but it is a different version than the one on “Teaching You The Fear” according to sources. Every version I’ve found on slsk, etc. has the Teaching version. I could be wrong though, wouldn’t be the first time.
Someone who claimed to have the single over on the comments at 7 inch punk says its a different version. I’ve never heard a different one either. I got into Really Red way late and didn’t even hear them until the Angry Neighbor CD.
malfeitor… I’m working with someone (the commenter from 7IP) on hopefully getting the “b” side ripped and eventually posted, if folks care. I would have though Really Red would garner more interest. Criminally underappreciated.
Thanks again for this post, Eric. Excellent — and I hope I can get the other RR stuff to you soon!
Martyn, what were Really Red like live? I’m so jealous that you got to see them play! Kelly is one of my favorite guitar players. I remember spending a lot of time with my guitar back in the day trying figure out some of the stuff he was doing (that odd “pinging” sound he got on “Starvation Dance,” for example).
When I was in high school, back around ‘84, my friend Bob came came in with this mix tape that his sister’s boyfriend made for him. It was just tons of great hardcore–stuff like Dead Kennedys and Circle Jerks, but lots of really obscure stuff, too. It changed my life. I had heard some punk before, but somehow never quite “got it” until that tape. Over the next 3 years, we gradually found out who did every, single song on that tape, except for one. And here it is, after all these years. “I Was A Teenage Fuckup.” Now I know. So thanks.
Teaching You The Fear is a great album, too.
A truely great band that demands attention as soon as any song starts. I honestly believe they’re one of the greatest bands ever, in any style of music. Soooooo good!!
I do have the Modern Needs 7″ and can very easily rip an MP3 of “White Lies” this morning!
I’ve been a fan of this band since hearing “Too Political.” Definitely underappreciated.
of all the really red songs getting posted, i’m bummed because i still can’t get a recording of ‘balance of terror’. i had it on one of my ‘funhouse’ tapes from the 80s….lost it, nd have never ben able to get the song out of my head, even 20 years later.
