Punk Rock and Other Assorted Bullshit

Latin Dogs

I really don’t know much about Michigan’s Latin Dogs. Warning! is their only release, released in 1982. The signature song is “Killed In Jail”, which has been comped on both Killed By Death 8.5 and Bloodstains Across The Midwest. The whole record features a twisted, fuzzed out guitar sound that I fucking love, and is further evidence that the Midwest produced some of the most potent, underappreciated bands of the early 80’s.

I picked up the repro of this a few years ago. Very good indeed. Wish more stuff like this would get reissued - I love the boots of the old stuff. Guess that could stir up a whole debate with the kbd crew…

One of the best to ever come out of Michigan. Plus this pre-dates most of the other “heavies” you can think of…thanks for the post!

As one of the two lucky recorder/producers of this jem it’s good to see that it’s still popping up on the web now and then. It’s even better to note that it’s admired by some.

I have fond memories of mixing/remixing in the basement of our townhouse, ears bleeding and frustrated by the limitations of the 4-tracks available. In retrospect, less was probably more.

To correct Rauk’s notes linked at top, Eddie and I weren’t sound engineers for Michigan Outdoors, but we were both in TV at the time so that’s close enough.

The Battle Creek, MI area was blessed with talent during that era (though admittedly, the Dogs are unique) and there are a lot of good recordings sitting in our archives. Keep your ears open - it’s never too late.

BTW, has anyone noticed that Sepultura’s recent “Convicted In Life” would be the perfect B-side to “Killed in Jail?”

    Hi Bob

“The Battle Creek, MI area was blessed with talent during that era”

Inluding your brother who taught me to play guitar.

Rauk talks a good line like he may know something worth listening to but the dude is very psychotic and have delusions about his personal grandeur.

  13. […] The Latin Dogs - Warning! E.P. 7″ November 7th, 2007 at 12:10 pm First posted by the now defunct(?) Something I Learned Today blog. What shall hit you first is the extremly great guitar sound. Fuzzy, messy and cheap. Sounds like it has been amplified through a small 10 Watt Marshall(you know these cigarette package sized ones) pushed up to eleven. The lyrics are composed with care and true concern about inmates, Reagan, animals, tyrants and the usual suspect. A nice punk package for someone getting into punk and its philosophy for the first time. By the way this is an awesome record! Enjoy. ALL HAIL THE LATIN DOGS - If not for this band to come out of small town Battle Creek Michigan alot of area musicians would never had seen the light of punk rock - This self released e.p. proved to all area kids you dont need to be signed to a “record deal” to be heard or admired - This E.p. has and will go down in history - (i might add my original pressing of this e.p. still has never been played its as good as gold in my eyes )
