Punk Rock and Other Assorted Bullshit

Ignition

Along with Swiz and Soulside, Ignition provided the soundtrack to my last years of high school, and their songs often evoke many a cool memory. Being a Dischord band I’m sure many of you know the band’s history. If not, this should suffice. I was always partial to the bands first two singles, released in 1987 on their own label. While the singles were hard to come by at the time, I was able to pick up a 12″ (pictured above) which included both. Dischord compiled the bands singles, album, and 12″ as Complete Services in 1995. A check of the Dischord store seems to indicate it’s out of print.

Notes:
> Bassist Chris Thomson went on to front Circus Lupus, The Monorchid, and Skull Kontrol. He’s currently part of Chicago’s Red Eyed Legends.
> Jim H covers Ignition and the first single much better than I could ever hope to. Check it out

I was living in Germany in ‘87. I was listening to the radio on my beat-box one afternoon, and came across an incredible radio show (in German) all about Punk Rock and Hardcore. I slipped a blank tape inside the player and managed to get most of the show taped. Some years later when I heard ‘Anger Means’ on the ‘State of The Union’ comp I recognised the intro as being from that very same radio show. Timeless Trivia!

And what a soundtrack it was. I saw both Swiz & Soulside in the day; Swiz at 3 different shows, but the Soulside show was/is one of my favorite shows ever. And I have been to quite a few. I have never seen a guitar player live go so insane, I mean really go OFF, and still play the way Jason did in Swiz. Never did get to see Ignition. Funny story: one day my friend and I drove to the middle of CT to see who we thought were Ignition. Turned out to be a biker band. :( We left depressed and went sk8ting.

Can’t go wrong with Ignition. That’s weird about the CD being OOP, Dischord doesn’t let much of their catalog lapse (particularly something like this). The other day I ripped my copy of Marginal Man for someone since it doesn’t seem to be in print anymore either.

Mal.. hear the Beefeater CD is also OOP, not sure why Dischord is letting things go. Maybe lack of interest? This stuff is closing in on 20 years old and the kids today…

Yeah these were some of the first records I ever bought and my favorite ignition records.

My tragic record collector memory though is that I remember when I was buying them I was looking at and considering buying the test pressing for the youth brigade 7inch, but it was like $25 and I was in high school and already had the songs on the 12inch. sigh.

Love this 12″. I remember taping Anger Means off Peel. Like you say it was nigh on impossible to get hold of the 7″ so I had to wait a couple of years til the 12″ came out as well. Great stuff.
