Something I Learned Today

Punk Rock and Other Assorted Bullshit

L-Seven

This one seemed like a perfect tie-in to the previous post, given the Dave Rice connection. L-Seven were an early Detroit “post punk” band, for lack of a better term. L-Seven existed from 1980 to 1983, featuring Rice on guitar and Larissa Strickland (pre Laughing Hyenas ). The band’s sole legacy is this 3 song 7″ on Touch & Go records. The bands sound didn’t fit with the other bands on the label, so T&G decided to release the record on the one-off ‘Special Forces’ sub-label. Anyone looking for in-depth band info should definitely check out the Punk Vault’s post on this record - tons of first-hand info. As for this record, well the tracks are all excellent, think along the lines of Fly On A Wire era Effigies with female vocals. “Clear Vision” is my favorite

I thought this was an “L7″ post. You ever heard of the chick punk band? They’re pretty good. Check out ther “Bricks are heavy” CD.

Wasn’t Larissa Strickland John Brannon’s girlfriend at one point?

ah, Larissa…the girl who looked 72 when she was 27. Anyway, I used to know some peeps in blAnnD ArborE that knew Larissa. Last thing I heard (and this was a while ago) was that she had relocated to Florida in an attempt to clean up her heroin problem. Can’t see how Florida would help a person clean up such a problem, but that’s what I heard.

“Bricks Are Heavy” - wasn’t that the one produced by Butch Vig. Phpppt.

As for, “Have you heard of this chick punk rock band, L7?” - well, the duh is this: everybody reading this blog probably has. They’re not that obscure, y’know. . . not exactly turning people on to new exotic sounds, bud. And that’s why people read this blog - to learn about “L-Seven”, not “L7″. Square.

here’s another comment after reading prev entries; did anyone w/ the smug remarks here, ever put 20years into a career on the road? she never made$ we only know her from the band. an artist. great band.

    15. Paulie November 7th, 2006 2:34 pm

      Larissa’s band was L-Seven, not L7.
She was a great person, I’m sad to see her go.

Message posted by Kevin S on a public website (the Hyenas’ MySpace profile):

“Although I had not been in touch with Larissa for some time, I knew that, as in the past, our paths would cross and we would once again pick-up where we left off. We lived together for many years and Larissa taught me a great deal. She taught me about art, music and about music history. Most of all, she taught me about being an artist.

      -She was passion.

I had hoped that one day I would be able to share the stage with her again but expected it only in the distant future. She was a great influence on me.
Parliment cigarettes…charcoal sketches and sharing beans on toast with John. She once, literally, talked me out of jail…like she just waived a magic wand. Thank you, Larissa. ”

So, for you all with the smug and/or sophomoric remarks, please remember that a lot of people both loved and knew Larissa, in addition to her music. Please remember that you are talking about a _person_ and not some caricature of a “punk chick”.

      That is all.

i just learned of this tragedy in the past couple days. it’s made me ill for those couple days and will probably make me ill again when i think of Larissa’s untimely passing - and i will. Larissa had a life before music - art - and it earned her full-access-backstage photo passes to the *first* KISS tour at Cobo hall (Detroit,MI). Cream mag printed her pic w/KISS backstage. Larissa was then a sophomore in h.s. (iirc). on the next monday southfield highschool went berzerkerz. Larissa moved to NY to do art for Casablanca and/or KISS for a while.

Last time we saw each other was when she came over to my place in A2 totally lonely - abandoned.

this is very difficult for me to write, i think you understand.

all she ever wanted was to ‘be part of,’ ‘to be included IN’ - and all the guys had run away that night (late summer 1995). from my perspective Larissa contributed far more quality and quantity to art and music with her energy and her magic than she got credit for and she was feeling abused and left out more and more often.

      she needed to be noticed.

now i feel lonely, totally lonely. i’m happy to hear she got married. i hope that was a GoodThing ™ for her. good night sweet princess; better dreams this time, i hope.

    19. […] As many regular readers of the music blogs know, Larissa was also in L-Seven before The Hyenas. She sang. Eric posted this a while back at Something I Learned Today. I got the photo here. […]
