Something I Learned Today

Punk Rock and Other Assorted Bullshit

Questions & Recommendations

A couple of things:

  • Is anyone receiving popup messages when loading this site? I’m trying to determine if this is a spyware issue on my machine or something that’s been added to my template. Nothing against people that have ads, etc on their sites, but I’m not interested in making money of this. Just so everyone know that I haven’t added anything deliberately.
  • My needle is shot. Can anyone recommend a good cartridge or stylus? I’m currently using a Stanton D72E cartridge with an old Pioneer turntable and I’m having trouble finding info on stylus replacement or cartridge replacement. Recommendations appreciate.
  • If you have the chance I’d recommend seeing Bob Mould on this latest tour. Full band, songs from Sugar and Husker Du, very energetic and loud. We saw the Toronto show and it was well worth the drive.
  • Anyone listening to anything good? I’m spinning my wheels trying to find something new and exciting.

Pop-ups - WebStats4U does it now apparently. Chromewaves wrote about it in this post:

      http://www.chromewaves.net/index.php?itemid=1985

      And others agree.

No pop-ups here with either Safari or Firefox browsers on my mac powerbook.

When I lived in Minneapolis far and away the best place to get audiophile gear was Jerry Raskin’s Needle Doctor. He’s still in business and I have friend from all around the country who still use him as a go-to guy for stylus/cartridge replacements: http://www.needledoctor.com/

New stuff to suggest is a slippery slope since it is all so subjective but I’m currently enjoying last year’s Isis album, Panopticon (Ipecac). This year’s Red Sparowes (sic) disc (on Nuerot), the new Miss Alex White (In The Red), Jesu (Hydrahead) featuring former Godflesh and Swans folk, Thee More Shallows “More Deep Cuts” (Turn), the new Lungfish disc and believe it or not the debut by MacKaye’s The Evens is pretty cool…

It looks like Firefox is blocking a popup whenever I log onto the site…

Not sure if you’d like them, but Death From Above 1979 is a great band, and one of my favorite albums of the year…

as far as something new to listen to.. have you heard career suicide? they’re probably my favorite band around right now, and I can’t describe em except to say they play hardcore punk they way it’s meant to sound… if you wanna check em out for yourself then you can hear some mp3’s at http://careersuicide.tk/

they are awesome live, and if you get the chance to ever check em out i would do so

    6. alex October 6th, 2005 11:34 pm

No pop-ups on firefox running on my ibook.

new things to listen to? I’m pretty much back and forth between Autolux and Bloc Party at the moment. Well worth the listen and Autolux have a nice live show, more on the sonic side than energetic, but I’ve seen them twice and will again.

Just saw Gang of Four and The Pixies at Coney Island. Gang of Four are still one of the greatest things ever wrought from rock.

Thanks for running a great blog.

some personality crisis would be good on this site

    8. marcdark October 7th, 2005 1:35 am

Occasionally I do get a pop up when I come to your site, assumed its blogspot trying to make a buck, had to use pop up blocker on firefox.

Hey never asked you what were your thoughts on that Evil Queens CD I sent you.

      Marc

Sponsor a Something I Learned Today jingle contest.

Your site discriminates against people who can’t hear. Braille would be nice for your sight-challenged visitors.

      Don’t slouch.

I have a pop-up problem of my own right now but I hope some porn will resolve that crisis.

Write about bands that put out 8 copies of an ep that never made it out of small rural communities in Iowa.

    10. john October 7th, 2005 5:35 am

no pop-ups here. heres some stuff I’d love to hear again:
      Ring of Fire 12″
No Milk On Tuesday - 7″ Crucifucks style CT/HC

      new stuff:
swedish HC like Wolfbrigade or Victims - yr in for a real pounding

    11. G October 7th, 2005 11:34 am

      No pop-up for me.
Did you get my mail? May as well throw it out there- Anybody see a bittorrent of a rcent Mould show? I think those songs on the new album would sound much better live and it be great to hear Canty drumming for the Sugar stuff.

    12. RICO VANIAN October 7th, 2005 2:32 pm

saw Bob Mould in NYC the other nite-
      great show- he looks healthy.
wish they woulda played about 3 more Husker Du toons, but happy to see Bob play anything!

    13. fab October 7th, 2005 4:25 pm

Try the first lp of COBRA NOIR from Montréal Québec Canada ? A real good record ! You will like it…By the way : Thanks for all the good things of your blog. Very good and friendly. Very nice.
      Fab

    14. Scott October 7th, 2005 5:12 pm

Firefox blocks popups from here occasionally, it’s not a regular thing.

Check this for a needle: http://www.lpgear.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=LG&Product_Code=STAD0072E
Might be crap, but it’s only $30.

My current mp3 player additions are all fairly wimpy. “Silent Alarm” by Bloc Party (who remind me of a louder version of The Cure), and the leaked Franz Ferdinand second album (which reminds me of the first Franz Ferdinand album) are getting a lot of play.

      how about Swell Maps?

Re: cartridges — I recently intalled an Audio Technica AT440ML cartridge on my turntable and I’m very happy with the sound.

Your blog’s the best! Thanks for turning me n to so much kickass music!

    17. J- October 9th, 2005 11:23 am

Yes -in fact I was wondering why- since some time a pop-up opens when loading your page. I never looked at it since Firefox prevents popup from opening.
Hope you can get rid of it anyway!!

    18. Anonymous October 10th, 2005 5:52 am

i agree with career suicide also.
also observers, definitely worth checking out if you haven’t.
baseball furies for fast rock ‘n’ roll punk.
clorox girls for great, goofy pop punk.
bbq is bringin back some doowop in punk.
any of the 7″s comin off big neck records.
if you haven’t check ‘em out already.

    19. Al October 10th, 2005 8:34 pm

New Fiona Apple has some good tracks. No joke!

    20. Terry Towlette October 10th, 2005 8:36 pm

      The Brat
      The employees
      Gizmos

      old but good

    21. Eric October 10th, 2005 8:56 pm

Thanks for all of the info - keep the recommendations coming, I have a lot to check out.

As for popups, the culprit is the “Webstats4u” javascript which will soon be removed.

    22. herman-layne October 11th, 2005 3:18 am

for whatever it is worth… i just got a popup when coming on to your site.

    23. Rich in CLE October 11th, 2005 7:09 am

As for new music, check out the new My Dad Is Dead album, A Divided House. Not as noisy as Mark’s older stuff, but the songwriting is excellent.

    24. Ken October 13th, 2005 10:35 am

Dead Stop from Belgium are the best hardcore band I’ve heard in ages. Negative Approach style super tight hc with great energetic vocals. So good I got shivers when I first heard them.

For a good bang-for-the-buck, I’ve had good experiences with the Grado Prestiege series cartridges (from $40-$180) I recently replaced a Shure M97xE with a Grado Red ($110) from http://www.toddthevinyljunkie.com and I couldn’t be more pleased…

    26. fatcitizen October 14th, 2005 4:32 pm

BTW, I know it’s not your domain around here Eric, but I have to agree with Al about the Fiona Apple record. Surprisingly good.

    27. Bat Guano October 19th, 2005 5:19 pm

King Khan and BBQ. Google them bitches.

    28. ruedi October 20th, 2005 12:42 pm

pop ups now and then but firefox is blocking them anyways

seen bob in hamburg/germany and it sure was worth the 3 hour drive from berlin for a too short 2 hour gig featuring sugar AND dü classics as well as his bob-stuff… makes no sense at all an absolute highlight. friends took pics and ‘videos’ with their cam … baaaad sound quality but sure a nice thing for fools like me … anyone interested in those drop me a line .. i doubt it d considered a bootleg if ya watched it.. lol..

last good stuff i heard was ‘the bronx’ but then thats already a year or two old, anyways, ‘heart attack american’ kicked ass….
then last year (or was it this?) german hc-legend ’spermbirds’ had a new album out.. ’set an example’.. which did like the title promised .. havin their old vocalist back they sure dont sound like the familyfathers they are.. speaking of which… you can check the band i m in and download the stuff from our site… not spectacular but we like it ; )

      cheers
