Pegboy

15 years after their inception and I still think of Pegboy as the “new” band for guitarist John Haggerty. Haggerty’s 1990 departure from Chicago legends Naked Raygun pretty much sounded the death knell for that band. Haggerty however picked up where he left off, teaming up with ex-Bhopal Stiffs Larry Damore and Steve Saylors (and brother Joe Haggerty on drums ) to form Pegboy. The material they would release was at times poppier than Raygun, but carried a dark, muscular sound that killed any cloying sweetness. Sure, Damore was no Jeff Pezzati on vocals, but Pegboy nonetheless produced an impressive catalog that goes toe to toe with the later Raygun material. My personal favorites are 1993’s Fore 12″ (with interim bass player Steve Albini) and the band’s fantastic swan song Cha Cha Damore. The Touch&Go website states the band disbanded in 2000, but I think they’ve done a couple of reunion shows since. The tracks below are from the 7″ appearances:
from 1991’s Field of Darkness 7″
Pegboy - Field of Darkness.mp3
Pegboy - Walk on By.mp3
from 1996’s split 7″ with Kepone
Pegboy - Dangermare.mp3

Cool, I haven’t heard this band in years and was never really into ‘em, but I’m really enjoying these songs so I need to keep that in mind the next time I’m scouring around for records!
Like the other Andrew, I haven’t heard (or thought of) Pegboy in years! Thanks for this post.
Great blog. I’ll have to add you to the blogroll.
By way of Blank Forever,

I got into these dudes back in the early nineties, saw them with Helmet and I’ve been a fan ever since.
Thanks Eric, you da man.
Three Chord Monte and Strong Reaction are very, very strong albums. Fore was good but the rest I could and did leave.
i was pals with kepone back in richmond va… you should put up some of that stuff - they rocked… mostly on quarterstick records, i think. great site, eric…
I always really liked this band. I saw them live a few times and they were awesome. I know T&G’s website lists them as broken up, but I don’t think that’s the case so much as that they just can’t get their shit together. I’ve heard, from people that have bumped into various members of the band, that they want to do another record, but they don’t have the songs written. They’ve been saying that for at least 5 years, though.
Any of you guys know what John Haggerty is up to these days? Are these guys still in an around Chicago?
Just Curious.
Always good to see a pegboy post. I just got word yesterday that they are playing a super secret show Thursday night at Liars Club. I saw them do this a few years ago, and it was a great show. Spread the word, people.
That’s Thursday, August 18, 2005 at the Liars Club in Chicago on Fullerton…
Hey, Nice little diddy about Pegboy. I have some live stuff if your interested: CBGB’s (Fun show!), Fireside Bowl and Pittsburg. I also have Chutes and Ladders. If interested, send me an email…
Best,
Chris
I’m a big Pegboy fan, and I’ve been looking for Mp3s of Walk on by for a while now. It seems like the links that you have on this page: http://www.somethingilearned.com/2005/07/pegboy are dead. Is there anyway you could re-post that for me (or e-mail it to me?)
Thanks and keep up the good work.
Can you please repost “Walk On” and “Dangermare” ?
