Husker Du Rarities

The wife and I received our “deluxe” box set of Bob Mould’s Body of Song this weekend. I won’t go into a detailed review but suffice it to that both discs have been on “repeat” ever since. As most everyone is saying, this album is a nice return to form. I would file it somewhere between Last Dog & Pony Show and Copper Blue in the post Husker Mould discography, take that for what it’s worth. I won’t be posting tracks from the new LP (given this debate) but I thougth this would be a grand opportunity to post some old Husker Du rarities. The tracks below were gleaned from the Savage Young Du and Up in the Air boots, in addition to live tapes. Enjoy!

from their first demo tape (1979)
Husker Du - Sore Eyes.mp3

An outtake from the 1980 Statues sessions
Husker Du - Writer’s Cramp.mp3

Live July, 1981 as part of the Children’s Crusade tour
Husker Du - Private Hell.mp3
Husker Du - Call on Me.mp3

Outtake from 1983’s Metal Circus 12″
Husker Du - You Think I’m Scared.mp3
Husker Du - Today’s The Day.mp3

FYI… I’ve gone back and reactivated a couple of other tracks in my post from October 2004
Also, pics and info from the exhaustive Husker Du Database

Ah, my friend, what a nice way to wake up in the morning.
Yea, Body of Song is pretty incredible. I haven’t stopped listening to it yet either. Can’t wait for the tour.

Curses! I totally should have pre-ordered BoS. Gotta wait another week here.

Hoping it’s closer to ‘Copper’ on that kind of scale…

“You Think I’m Scared” got my blood going today! It’s got that “Bricklayer” -ish audio pummeling that few can pull off so earnestly.

I saw them w/ the Detonators and Soul Asylum (and one time before that) in ‘85 or ‘86. They were good… switching from pop to hardcore and back. Great band.

    Hillarious photo - great songs.

    Anymore early stuff/boots worth having?

p.s. I think the debate re: Bob’s new album is not so much posting an MP3 or two (which his BobLog even does sometimes) but that posting the whole album is taking the piss…

Body Of Song is very good. I moved from Husker Du to Leatherface as my favorite band. They took the Husker thing and went from there. I was a fan of Husker Du from Metal Circus through New Day Rising. Then the slide began and Warehouse left me cold. I’m glad Bob’s back though!

  15. […] One of the most frequent email, etc. requests I get is for the reactivation of the tracks associated with the Husker Du rarities post from July 2005. So, with nothing pressing at the moment and the stack of “to-be-blogged” material rapidly dwindling to nil I give you about an hour and 20 minutes of little heard Husker material. A couple of tracks (”Erase Today” and “It’s Not Fair”) were officially released on comps (Blasting Concept Volume 2 and Kitten), but most of the material here is from the Savage Young Du and Up in the Air boots and live tapes/CD-R’s. Best bet is the great sounding ‘80/’81 live material, but the Metal Circus and New Day Rising outtakes are pretty good as well. Broken down chronologically, with a huge debt of gratitude to Paul Hilcoff’s Husker Du discography (flyer courtesy of Minnesota Historical Society) […]
