Can’t Take The Heat
I was planning a little summer music for a couple of weeks later, but given the early heat wave we’ve experienced the past week I just had to move it up. 4 days of temps in the 90’s and high humidity is enough to make us upstate New Yorkers curl up and hide underground. No shit, it’s been pretty sticky and miserable. As it stands I’m sitting in a pool of sweat typing this. Not a pretty picture. Here are a couple of hot summer treats:
Lazy Cowgirls - Bullshit Summer Song.mp3
A no bullshit classic from 1987’s Tapping the Source. God love ya, Pat Todd.
Knockout Pills - Summertown Rundown.mp3
If you live in Tucson you’ve earned the right to bitch about the heat. Energetic pop punk from their great 2004 LP 1+1=ATE.
FM Knives - Summer Holiday.mp3
another poppy blast from 2003’s Useless and Modern
Go! - Long Hot Summer.mp3
NYC hardcore courtesy Mike Bullshit and Co. From the 1990 7″ Why Suffer?
Overkill - Hell’s Getting Hotter.mp3
LA punk, from their 4 song debut EP in 1982. Another record from the SST ‘MIA’ series.
Bassholes - 98 Degrees in the Shade.mp3
lofi trash from their 1992 debut 7″ on In The Red
Archers of Loaf - Smokin’ Pot in the Hot City.mp3
fire one up and turn on the AC. A mellow instro to finish things up, originally the b-side to “Harnessed in Slums”, comped onto the singles collection Speed of Cattle

I feel you left out a critical one, in deference to the author’s of your blog’s title–Celebrated Summer, Husker Du. Although, certainly, an obvious choice.
Upstate NY? Where? Lets hang out and trade records! Oh, and I’d add Unnatural Axe’s “Summertime” to the list. Or the Splash Four’s cover of it, which is actually better.
Have you considered this invention I heard about called “swimming pools”?
Courtney… it was the first song I thought of, but somehow it was lost in the shuffle. This is a live version from 1987:

Rich… I’m in Syracuse. If I ever get off my leash I’ll have to head up to Buffalo for some shows. Here’s The Unnatural Axe song:

And you are correct, the Splash 4 version is better. Rougher and tougher sounding:

And Jim, swimming pools? What are you, some kind of millionaire?!??
Swimming pools should be common, right? Well…I guess maybe not in New York. But listening to these seems a little unnatural when it’s still cloudy outside (in California. Doesn’t that just seems wrong?).
I don’t trust those community pools Laura but Eric should teach his kids the fine art of scamming yourself into a hotel pool. But then again there’s always the Summer Sun Splash pools (http://shop.store.yahoo.com/backyardcity/sumsunsplasp.html)
You know, my wife wants me to get one of those cheapo pools. The only problem is that town we live in (where we pay a shitload of taxes w/o a community pool) requires such a pool have electrician installed conduit and a fence around it. Not worth it.
I’ve always maintained that given the small “pool window” (2-3 months at most) in CNY that I will never have one put in. I will however work my ass off to become friends with someone that does have a pool. All of the enjoyment with none of the responsibility.
Best Archers song on that CD.
