Punk Rock and Other Assorted Bullshit

Dicks - Live At Raul’s

Dicks/Big Boys - Live at Raul's

Reading about the Dicks 2004 reunion show over at Lexicon Devil got me thinking about the current state of their body of work. Shit, I remember being excited years ago when I first heard of the impending Dicks retrospective CD on Alternative Tentacles. Here was a chance to finally hear the Kill From The Heart LP and the band’s side of the Live at Raul’s split with the Big Boys. In reality though the reissue was a big letdown, leaving many gaps. Specifically, only 2 of 3 songs froms the first 7″, 4 of 10 from Live at Raul’s, and 5 of 12 from the criminally out of print Kill From the Heart (though I’m sure few are weeping over the exclusion of “Dicks Can’t Swim”). More than half of the AT released These People made the cut though, raising calls of “bullshit”. My personal take is this would have made a nice double disc, one being dedicated to first incarnation of the band from Austin, a second for the San Francisco version. Then again, I ain’t in the record business. Just my 2ยข

Back to the Live at Raul’s set: Recorded September 19 and 20 at Raul’s Nightclub in Austin. 7 of the 10 songs were released on this set only, and they are some of the Dicks best stuff. Take a listen:

Dicks - Fake Bands.mp3
Dicks - Dicks Hate The Police.mp3
Dicks - Dead in a Motel Room.mp3
Dicks - Babysit.mp3
Dicks - Shit Fool.mp3

in 1990 Selfless Records issued a Live at Raul’s double 7″, 4 tracks apiece for the Dicks and Big Boys. The kicker? One of the tracks by each band was previously unreleased. Here’s the Dicks unreleased track:

Dicks - Kill From The Heart.mp3

And, oh by the way, Idle Time Archive has some photos from the Dicks 2004 Austin, TX reunion show.

That Dicks CD was one of the biggest letdowns of all time. Sure it was nice to have the stuff on CD but there is no excuse for not just reissuing the entire Dicks recoreded works. You are right, a double CD would have been ample enough space to include everything.

Why this hasn’t been corrected in the many years since that CD was released is one of punk rock’s great mysteries I suppose. I’ll have to get around to creating my own from all the vinyl one of these days.

I’ll never understand how “Executive Dive” makes it on the comp when “Pigs Run Wild” is left off.

And I too made my own disc. Shit, now all the tracks I like are on the IPod.

Great band, so much vitriol, anotherperson gutted by the gaps on the CD…

Any chance of posting “bourgeoise pig” (is that the title?) from the 1st LP?

“Kill From the Heart” was on one of the first compilation tapes I ever made by sitting with my finger poised on the “record” button of my boombox in 1980-something. Sadly, it took me years to figure out who it was, since I never bothered to tape the mic breaks of those local DJs. (DUH.) When I did finally put 2 and 2 together and buy a Dicks record, it was like dying and going to Texas…! I don’t make lists anymore, but if you held me at gunpoint and asked me to name my top 5 punk songs of all time, “Kill From the Heart” would be up there. I was totally unaware of this live version — which completely smokes! Thanks!

Oh the JOYS of three nights of Dicks reunion in March and another night in August! The whole band was in fine form an Salty Green of Hickoids fame filling in! Gary was also packing a CDR of the First Dicks show from the Punk Rock Prom at the Armadillo World Headquarters,Austin,Tx. 04.16.80.One of the “unreleased” songs from the set is Bookstore which appeared on a Cool Beans comp and later the AT retrospective. The BIG cream dream was the inclusion on the CDR of two outtakes from the first Dicks S/T single different versions of Pigs Run Wild and Dicks Hate the Police!Email me for mp3s of the CDR.
